16-Year-Old Fell Asleep Behind the Wheel & Police Say Her iPhone Saved Her Life

A mom is counting her blessings after her 16-year-old daughter was injured in a vehicle crash. Although the accident is nothing to be thankful for, the mom is unbelievably relieved that her iPhone helped her daughter escape a worse fate. Pennsylvania teen Lindsay Leskovac, 16, dropped off a friend and then fell asleep behind the wheel on her return home, crashing into trees and two poles.

Leskovac was unconscious and stuck inside the vehicle and was startled to wake up to a dispatcher trying to get her attention, according to People.

“She was on the phone with them for 22 minutes then, telling them who she was, who we were, who her parents were and they were trying to locate her. She was very far off-road,” Laura told the magazine. “They were pinging her location to try to send the rescue workers to her.”

The mom credits the iPhone 14’s crash detection system for alerting authorities to her daughter’s distress, noting that after 30 seconds the system triggers an alert to first responders if the user does not respond to an alert. Lindsay’s injuries were so severe that every second counted.

She broke both of her femurs, her spine, neck, shoulder blade, pelvic bone, left foot, and right wrist as well as receiving other injuries, People reported. Emergency personnel found her upside down in the truck because she had secured her seatbelt.

“Having this feature was what alerted them to her,” Laura claims. “Otherwise we would have gotten devastating news that our daughter was found dead out in a field somewhere. So we’re just so blessed.”

According to WFMJ, the mom now is on a “mission” to not only educate others about drowsy driving but to ensure everyone has this feature enabled.

In some good news, despite the long road to recovery she faces, Lindsay was released from the hospital over Labor Day Weekend. A GoFundMe account was started to help support her healing journey.

“She’s really positive. She’s just really thankful and blessed to be alive,” Laura shared, per People. “She said she knows she’s going to be out of those things for a while, but she’s just looking forward to what else life has in store for her.”
