Can we talk for a moment about the sacrifices a mother makes to take care of her baby? It starts with the actual delivery, which, no matter how your baby is born, the mother is a rock star. Then there are the sleepless nights and maybe days without a shower. Of course, there are days when a mom just can't, which is totally normal and perfectly OK too. But for the most part, we power through no matter how we feel.
And then, for a lot of moms, there is breastfeeding. It's a beautiful bonding time for so many moms and babies. Well, that is until the baby sinks its teeth in and her nipple falls off! Yes, this can totally happen! A TikTok mom experienced this nipple trauma and lived to tell the tale.
The mom is an avid breastfeeder.
TikToker Jasmine Chiswell, aka @jasminechiswell, is a blonde bombshell who channels old Hollywood and shares beauty tips and tricks online. She's gone viral plenty of times, but her recent video about her breastfeeding debacle shook her 16 million followers.
Chiswell is mom to a baby boy named Midnight, who she said she has breastfed for nearly a year. Midnight has tried to bite before, but this time was different.
"He bites down on my nipple, literally with all of his teeth, and pulls," she explains in the clip. Chiswell says that her pain tolerance is pretty high, so she didn't think about it, and because it was late at night, she just went to sleep.
She woke up to a mess.
The following day, Chiswell's husband woke up and had a terrible "fright." At that point, she realized that her shirt was covered in blood and she was shocked.
"I kid you not. The tip of my nipple was hanging off," she explains.
This caused her to scream. (No kidding!)
She says she was warned this could happen, "that the nipple could just fall off."
OMG!
Chiswell administered some first aid to herself.
Laughing, Chiswell explains that she bandaged her nipple and put an ice pack on it in hopes that it would stick itself back together. She applies her lipstick, and the TikTok ends.
Not surprisingly, this had everyone dying for a follow-up, including us. Thankfully, she came through. In another video, she says people told her it would go back together, and to her delight it did.
"I kid you not. They were not lying. Is it bruising? Yes. Is it crusty? Yes. But it's stuck together!" she exclaims.
TikTokers were going nuts.
Not surprisingly, there were a ton of comments about Chiswell's story. And people had questions.
"Girl what do you mean but it off? Like completely off? Like hanging by a thread off? ," one person asked.
Others wanted to know how she proceeded to feed Midnight or if the whole system was interrupted.
"Do you still feed from that side? If not right now will you? Did your supply drop?" someone asked.
"Does it still work? Like for feeding?" another comment reads.
Other moms empathized and shared their own stories.
"Mine was barely still attached, but within a few weeks it was like nothing happened," a follower explained.
"my son did that to mine, 17 years ago, it stuck back together but I lost loads of feeling in it," someone else wrote.
Chiswell is not alone.
There are other TikTok videos of moms sharing their nipple stories, and it is incredible to hear that this isn't that uncommon and women keep nursing afterward because they feel that it is the best way to feed their babies. We actually shared another mom's story about her nipple falling off while she was nursing her baby back in the fall of 2022. Amazingly, her nipple basically healed itself as well!
Moms are warriors. There are no two ways around it. Women are having parts of their bodies bitten off, yet there is nothing in the world they'd rather do than love on their baby, even if that infant is a savage. Congratulations to the breastfeeding goddesses out there. We think you are amazing!
