It's the most wonderful day of the year! Today, the Unicode Consortium, the governing body that regulates emoji worldwide, unveiled the newly approved emoji coming in 2020 β 117 in all. We're getting tons of new emoji that will make texting and graphic language a much richer and diverse experience, like the transgender pride flag, polar bear, accordion, fondue kit, tamale, and bubble tea.
Still, humans are humans, and we're an immature bunch, so naturally, some emoji will be used for sexy purposes. Thanks to emoji, we can't look at an eggplant or peach the same way again. In 2020, we're predicting that the beaver emoji will make its grand debut into our popular culture, while the new plunger emoji will come to symbolize creeps on dating apps. What a wide, wonderful world of emoji and language.
The emoji will be released in September and October 2020. Here's a peek at some of the new ones.
Smiling Face With Tear
Finally! As a person that frequently sobs while watching dogs on Instagram, I appreciate that now, I can send rows of the smiling face with tear emoji when I mass-text the video of the Husky who won't get out of a bathtubΒ to my friends.
Black Cat
Another addition to the goth emoji club β which includes the spiderweb, lit candle, black heart, and vampire β the black cat emoji will spook up your Halloween group text. Keep it superstitious by incorporating the new ladder emoji, also coming in 2020.
Potted Plant
Emoji has jumped on the millennial houseplant bandwagon, giving us plant lovers a chance to bring our potted philodendrons into text. Hang out on Instagram long enough, and this emoji will be everywhere during #monsteramonday.
Teapot
Yaaaaas! The teapot emoji will grace our group texts, ready to herald piping hot gossip coming through the green and blue chat bubbles. Now we really can spill the tea, in the form of salacious news, rumors, and total drama. Get your sugar cubes ready.
Pinched Fingers
I don't know about you all, but not having a chef's kiss emoji has been cramping my texting style since I got my first smartphone. How are we supposed to indicate that a certain food photo or sardonic clapback is worthy of a master chef? Now we can!
Transgender Flag
The Unicode Consortium is alway looking to expand diversity in emoji β last year, disability- and accessibility-related emoji were added to the approval list, and they're expanding the gender-neutral options for the people emoji as well. Now the transgender flag joins the crowd, so folks can share their pride with this enduring symbol.
There's tons more emoji coming!
Emojipedia put together this helpful video to show us the full suite of new emoji coming this year. While several of them are new, others are skin tone and gender variant additions to existing emoji. Which 2020 emoji are you most excited about?
