22 Celebs Who Have Weird Phobias

Most of us are scared of stuff — sometimes even things that don't make any sense at all. There are some really weird and unexpected things that randomly freak people out, along with more common phobias, like spiders, fire, and snakes. And celebrities are no exception. As we've said before, they're people, too! So just like the rest of us sometimes irrational humans, stars also have unusual phobias. Phobias don't have to make sense and they often don't at all. No matter how worldly or educated an individual is, they may still suffer from a phobia, so clearly celebs are not exempt.

Although we should also point out that some celebs also have weird quirks that aren't phobias at all, but rather preferences. We've all seen those crazy riders that have demands like, "No brown M&Ms," or asking for exclusively "Versace towels." Most of those have nothing to do with phobias, so they're actually even stranger.

The phobias at least we can excuse since technically it's a type of anxiety disorder, and that's not something that can be controlled or easily overcome. Phobias can have terrible effects too, from causing the sweats to full-on panic attacks. So yeah, we genuinely feel for these celebs. Some of these phobias are really weird, though, so get ready …

Christina Ricci

Actress Christina Ricci is well-known for her offbeat persona, but what fans might not know is that she actually has a really unusual phobia. She suffers from botanophobia, which means she's afraid of indoor plants. "They are dirrrrty. If I have to touch one, then it just freaks me out," she told the Daily News several years ago.

Tyra Banks

As a swimsuit model, Tyra Banks has spent a ton of time in the ocean, right in the vicinity of her own phobia — dolphins! "I am afraid of dolphins. I used to have dreams that I was in a swimming pool and dolphins were like bumping into my legs," she once explained to radio show host Howard Stern.

Elliot Page

Back in 2014, actor Elliot Page did an interview promoting his film X-Men: Days of Future Past, and he admitted to a legitimate fear of tennis balls. "I have a really intense phobia of tennis balls," he said in the video. "I couldn't tell you what it is. Tennis comes on, and I have to leave the room. It's intense."

Khloé Kardashian

Khloé Kardashian seems like one of the more mellow members of her famous family, but believe it or not, she has an irrational phobia. She's terrified of belly buttons. "You can't touch mine, and I don't want to touch yours. When I'm in the shower, I wear hand mitts and I scream every time I wash my belly button," she confessed on her website and app in 2016.

Sean 'Diddy' Combs

It's easy to think rapper and businessman Sean 'Diddy' Combs was just joking around when he appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and said, "I fear a woman with a long second toe." But it turns out he was confessing a real phobia. Actress Kate Beckinsale was on the show at the same time and when she gave him a peek at her toes, he absolutely freaked out.

Liam Payne

Several years ago, former One Direction singer Liam Payne appeared on a radio show and explained that he has a phobia of other people's spoons that he believes stems from a school punishment. "It is a bit weird. When I was a kid I was a bit naughty at school, and when you were naughty they made you do the washing up," he explained. "I had to wash all these nasty spoons and, then it's just stuck with me after. I don't know what people are doing with their spoons — I don't want to know!"

Most people absolutely love the one thing acclaimed actress Nicole Kidman is terrified of. She suffers from lepidopterophobia — a fear of butterflies. "I have tried to get over it," she once explained. "I walked into the big butterfly cage at the American Museum of Natural History and had the butterflies on me, but that didn't work. I jump out of planes, I could be covered in cockroaches, I do all sorts of things, but I just don't like the feel of butterflies' bodies."

Kendall Jenner

Khloé Kardashian's little sister, Kendall Jenner, also took to her app to reveal her phobia, and it's a doozy. She's afraid of holes in patterns. "Trypophobics are afraid of tiny little holes that are in weird patterns," she wrote. "Things that could set me off are pancakes, honeycomb or lotus heads (the worst!)." Kendall has also admitted that she suffers from anxiety, so perhaps it's a function of that.

Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johansson shares a phobia with quite a few people. The actress is terrified of birds. "Something about wings and beaks and the flapping," she told New York magazine. "I'm terrified of them. That still hasn't gone away. My uncle is terrified of birds as well, so it runs in the family." It's a common fear, but considering she starred in a film called We Bought a Zoo, it's strange.

David Beckham

That's right, the gorgeous, buff, and super manly footballer has a major fear. David suffers from anidaphobia, which means he's afraid of frogs. He opened up about it when he appeared in a documentary that took him into the Brazilian rain forest where he was forced to confront his phobia.

Sarah Paulson

American Horror Story actress Sarah Paulson is actually full of phobias, and they've used them in the show. She shares Kendall Jenner's trypophobia and she's also afraid of bees and clowns. "I could be carrying a small child, and if a bee came around, that baby's getting dropped," she said. "I can't manage my feeling about it."

Adele

Singer Adele's phobia actually stems from a childhood trauma. When she was a kid, she had a run-in with a seagull that left a permanent scar. "I was walking down the promenade in Tenby, eating a 99 [a type of ice cream cone], when this huge [expletive] seagull came down and swiped it off me," she explained once. "I've still got a scar from its claw on my shoulder. I thought it was going to take me away with it." The incident left her with a case of laridaphobia, a fear of seagulls.

Kristen Stewart

Twilight actress Kristen Stewart is another celeb with an animal-related phobia. She's hated horses since she was injured in a riding accident as a child, and when she was filming Snow White and the Huntsman, she was forced to face the phobia. "I was really, really not happy about having to do all that [horseback riding]," she said of the experience. "I don't like that — I hate that."

Taylor Swift

Superstar singer/songwriter Taylor Swift admitted on the Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2014 that she has an irrational fear of sea urchins. She was visibly distressed just at the mention of them, and went on to explain that she actually avoids getting in the ocean altogether because of the extreme phobia.

Jennifer Aniston

Do not, we repeat, do not ever ask Jennifer Aniston to go swimming. She accidentally drove her tricycle into a pool when she was a very small child, and has been terrified of being underwater ever since. She said: "So, I can't go underwater, and no one will believe me. I honestly can't."

Channing Tatum

Channing Tatum also took the opportunity to air out his fears during an appearance on Ellen, when he admitted that other than singing in front of a crowd, his biggest fear is porcelain dolls. "I just think they're super-freaky," he said before Ellen attempted to make him face his fear, resulting in him trying to climb out of his chair.

Sarah Michelle Gellar

Well, this one couldn't be any more ironic. In 1998, Sarah Michelle Gellar told Rolling Stone that she has a major fear of cemeteries. The Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress also has a fear of being buried alive. She said that filming in cemeteries usually brought her to tears — kinda crazy considering her most famous role.

Oprah Winfrey

This one is both really sad and also kind of funny because it's just so weird. Oprah is afraid of chewing gum and has banned it in her offices. "I grew up poor in Mississippi, and my grandmother used to try to save gum. So she would put it on the bedpost, she would put it on the cabinet," she told Stephen Colbert on his show. "As a child, I used to bump into it and it would rub up against me, and you know what it's like when you've taken it out of your mouth and it's been out a couple of weeks? It's bad. And so I was afraid of it."

Matt Damon

While some consider this fear silly, we think it's totally valid. Actor Matt Damon may play a total badass in movies, but bring a snake around, and he can't deal. When filming We Bought a Zoo, he was apparently reduced to tears whenever the slithery creatures were on set.

Kylie Minogue

Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue might have one of the most bizarre phobias of any celebrity. She doesn't like clothes hangers. They make her so uncomfortable that she never hangs her clothes but lays them out instead. "I have a hanger phobia. I don't like the way they sound when you put them in the wardrobe," she explained in 2010.

Kristen Bell

Dax Shepard outed his wife Kristen Bell's weird phobia on Instagram a few years ago. Apparently, she despises the feeling of pruney fingers on skin, so she goes to the rather extreme step of swimming with gloves on to avoid having to deal with the sensation. Our favorite part of the post? That he used the #hollyweird hashtag.

Rita Ora

We honestly don't know how British singer Rita Ora has survived so long in the real world given her strange phobia. The woman is scared of toilets. You read that right — toilets. "I always feel that when I go to the toilet that something's going to come out of the bottom," she said in 2012. "I have this thing where I think this tunnel must start from somewhere, and sometimes I think, 'What if something comes out of the toilet?'"
