Couple Left Baby at Courthouse With No Food Because ‘They Were Gonna Take Him Anyway’

A Missouri couple faces charges of neglect after allegedly abandoning their baby. Jeremy Lamp and his wife, Jessica Lamp, decided to part with their baby boy, leaving him to be a ward of the state rather than take care of him. Even though they thought they were making the right choice, they didn’t go about it the right way. Since both parents have a history of legal troubles, they began to believe the court was going to take custody of their child. Unfortunately, their decision could land them in prison. Time will tell how things will play out for them.

Both 36-year-old Jeremy Lamp and 31-year-old Jessica Lamp have been charged with child neglect. According to a probable cause affidavit filed by the Chillicothe Police Department, the Lamps brought their infant son with them to the Livingston County Courthouse for a mandatory drug test.

An employee for the Children’s Division stated that Jeremy Lamp’s test came back negative. However, Jessica Lamp’s drug test did not — she tested positive for methamphetamine. The Lamps were told that they had three options. Jessica Lamp could leave the home, Jeremy Lamp could take the child and leave the home, or they could have the child stay with a relative.

None of these options seemed to suit the couple. Police reported Jeremy pushed the car seat towards a county official, People reported. They were told they ā€œcouldn’t leave the baby with them,ā€ but they were undeterred. Instead, they left the baby behind at the courthouse. They didn’t leave food, clothes, or any other baby items.

An hour later, the couple was located at the Hedrick Medical Center and arrested. At the time, Jeremy Lamp told police ā€œthey were gonna take him anyway.ā€ Jessica couldn’t explain why she chose to surrender her baby. She had been previously charged with child endangerment, according to KCTV.
