Gender-Neutral Baby Prep

Beyond Pink and Blue

Baby's First Books

Have some favorites from your childhood? It's never too early to add to your baby's bookshelf. This is also a great time to visit your local bookshop or browse online for new and notable baby books. Put your favorites onto your baby shower registry or your own shopping list.

Get a Diaper Bag

You'll be wearing this bag often, so get one you'll love. It should fit all your baby-care needs and your style. Are you strictly no-fuss? A simple bag with plenty of storage sounds like it'd fit the bill. Do you need it to be pretty? You're in luck, plenty of diaper bags could pass for a cute oversized bag.

Keepsake Toys

There are plenty of gender-neutral baby toys on the market, but it's still a little early to buy too many, especially since you'll get plenty as gifts once your baby arrives. However, now is a good time to look for a special first toy for your baby—a cute rattle or a cuddly teddy bear. It may even become a family keepsake.

What's in a Name?

There's no need to wait until you know your baby's gender to have picked out a few names. Some celebrity moms are even choosing names without regard to gender norms (see Blake Lively's new baby girl, James.) Even if you're sticking to tradition, you can start narrowing down your list early in your pregnancy.

Furniture Plans

Now is the time to start some big-picture planning about furniture. Start looking at large items like the crib, changing table and high chair, all while considering your space and budget. Some of these might even go on your registry.

Start Your Baby Shower Registry

You're expecting and it's likely you have friends and family who couldn't be more excited. Some people will ask for your registry early on, so it's a good idea to start working on one during the first half of your pregnancy, ideally after you've done some research or asked fellow moms for their must-haves.
