After getting her start as a child star with the help of her role as D.J. Tanner in Full House, Candace Cameron Bure knows what it’s like to live through every phase of her life in the spotlight. And unfortunately, that means that she’s also familiar with just how mean people can be, even to a total stranger.
Candace broke down in tears talking about her biggest insecurity on her podcast this week — something people have always told her they’re “annoyed” by.
Candace said a lot of people don’t like the sound of her voice.
During an episode of The Candace Cameron Bure Podcast that debuted on August 12, the former Hallmark Channel actress admitted that people often tell her that her voice is “annoying,” with some even saying they have to turn their TVs off when they see her on screen just so they don’t have to hear her speak.
“It’s a lot,” Candace said, immediately becoming emotional. “It’s the one criticism I constantly hear, is my voice.”
She did acknowledge that she’s hosted a podcast for years, where people are choosing to listen to her voice, so she can’t have that many haters.
“I’m sitting here, right now, and we’re on a podcast, and most of you are listening to me,” Candace said. “I’m crying because I just got really self-conscious of my voice, because that’s what you’re listening to. But I have a podcast, and we’re sharing Jesus.”
It’s something she’s working through.
The 50-year-old actress has never been shy about sharing how important her faith is to her, and she said that it’s played a big role in moving past her insecurity over her voice.
“I just want to share that, so I often — on the Story part of my Instagram — read the Bible,” she said. “Just a few verses, maybe a paragraph. I’ve never had more people say to me, ‘I love to hear you read The Bible. You make The Bible come alive for me.’”
Candace added, “It feels so redemptive that, like, God’s using the very thing that glorifies Him and the thing that’s brought me pain and then be rewarded for it. Not in a personal way rewarded. But people like the sound of my voice when I read the Bible.”
Fans left so many supportive comments for her.
For as many people as there are telling her that her voice is annoying, there are even more who left comments on an Instagram post featuring the clip of her podcast to share their support.
“Honey, GenX girls hear your voice and think of someone who’s been with us from childhood to now,” one person wrote. “I hate that anyone would be mean to you about something so intrinsic to who you are.”
Next time she’s feeling self conscious, Candace should read these comments. She’s not getting as much criticism for her voice as she probably thinks!
