What to Know
A lot of changes come with pregnancy and giving birth, and unfortunately, some of those hormonal shakeups can eventually lead to bigger problems, as it did for Hailey Bieber. In a new interview, she’s speaking out about a diagnosis she faced after her son, Jack, was born.
Hailey revealed that she was diagnosed with premenstrual dysphoric disorder, or PMDD, after welcoming the baby she shares with husband Justin Bieber. And for her, it was a “lonely journey” at first.
Hailey shared when she found out she was struggling with PMDD.
In an interview with WWD about her beauty company, Rhode, Hailey said that after Jack was born in 2024 — which she called “a really intense and special journey” — she found out that she had PMDD. According to the Cleveland Clinic, PMDD is a serious form of PMS that can cause “extreme irritability, anxiety or depression” before a period.
“After I had my son, I struggled with that a bit, and there’s just not a lot of conversation or research around it,” Hailey said, adding that “conversation” around the subject helps.
“When we can identify with each other and have conversations relating to each other and talking about the things we’re dealing with and struggling with, I do think it makes it feel like less of a lonely journey,” she said.
Her company is committing to a huge donation for women’s health.
WWD reported that Rhode is donating $5 million during a three year partnership with the Foundation for Women’s Health, which will support “medical research, education and care in historically underfunded areas, including pregnancy and postpartum health and autoimmune conditions.”
$1 million of her contribution will create a fund to invest in companies that are developing new ways to diagnose and treat health issues that women face.
This isn’t the first time she’s opened up about PMDD.
In March, Hailey appeared on the SHE MD podcast, where she first opened up about the diagnosis and how it shaped her postpartum experience.
“For me, it felt like the week before my period was not just ‘PMS,’” Hailey said at the time. “It felt extreme mentally. Like, ‘Why does it feel like my whole entire life is going to end?’ It sucks. It is also dangerous, and it should be taken seriously.”
“I was like, ‘This just feels way more intense than before,’ like the lead-up to getting your period,” she explained. “You’re like, ‘Why does it feel like my whole entire life is gonna end? Like, I don’t understand.’ You just have all these swirling thoughts and feelings, and just everything feels like the biggest deal in the world.”
Good for her for speaking out about PMDD, because she’s absolutely not the only person who has struggled with a disorder like this one. The changes that come after having a baby can be huge, so it’s important to know what to look out for.
