It's time to celebrate, because it's Amal Clooney's birthday! On February 3, 2021, she turned 43. (And, yes, she doesn't look a day over, like, 25.) The woman who got George Clooney to settle down is impressive in pretty much every way (she's a human rights lawyer, for gosh sake), and one thing we especially admire about Amal Clooney is her fashion. She's not always immediately thought of by people when they're thinking of style icons — but she is absolutely on other icons' levels.
Amal's style is a mix of old Hollywood glam, business chic, and trendy modern. She's not afraid to take fashion risks (like wearing a silver crop top or a leopard print dress), and she makes everything look good. In honor of her birthday, and the fact that she's barely aged a day, here are some of our favorite looks she's ever worn. Talk about a fashionista.
Met Gala Glam
For the 2015 Met Gala — one of the most iconic fashion events of the year — Amal stunned in this ruby red ruffled gown. It was designed by John Galliano, and it helped Amal really stand out at her first Met Gala event. She shone even brighter than the red carpet itself. What a splash!
Shining Star
Three years later, at the 2018 Met Gala, Amal was back again to stun the crowd. This time she wore a look by British designer Richard Quinn. Everything about it was show-stopping. The foil top, the pants, the epic floral skirt. She may not have grown up in the world of celebrity and fashion, but the human rights lawyer sure caught up fast.
Meghan Markle's Wedding
Amal and George are friends with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, so they both got to go to the royal wedding in 2018. (Quite the honor.) Amal showed up for the formal affair in a sunshine yellow dress and chic matching hat. When paired with George wearing a silver suit, the two looked absolutely impeccable.
Meeting the Pope
What does one wear for a seminar with the pope? Just ask Amal Clooney! She went with a black lace dress and a pillbox-style black hat. The whole look was very chic. It's a little bit Audrey Hepburn-esque. We love that Amal wears hats to special occasions. After all, she is British, and they take formal hat wearing seriously.
Splash of Red
If Amal's dress here looks familiar, it's probably because it looks a lot like Kate Middleton's blue and white poppy dress that also has a similar pattern. However, they're from different designers. Amal's is from the Italian designer Giambattista Valli, and it certainly helped her stand out on the red carpet at the Hail, Caesar! premiere.
Black Swan-Inspired
For the Cesar Film Awards in France, Amal dressed in this quirky feathered ombré look. George has always looked quite chic at his various movie events, but since marrying Amal, she's overshadowed him every time. And we're betting he doesn't mind, because how could he be mad that someone that stunning is by his side?
Lovely in Yellow
France's Cannes Film Festival has become one of the most fashionable movie events of the year, and Amal didn't disappoint when she attended with George in 2016. Her fluttery yellow gown had a big train and a daring thigh-high slit. She wasn't messing around in the silk chiffon Versace dress.
Silver Goddess
Amal was on the cutting edge of the matching separates trend. She wore this silver set to makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury's Christmas party in 2015. It's a pretty daring look, but Amal has never been one to shy away from taking fashion risks. She shares that in common with her friend Meghan Markle. Life isn't fun if you can't have fun with style!
Lawyer Chic
As much as Amal can show up to a party in a silver crop top, she can also pull a 180 and wear a modest matching dress and jacket. As a lawyer, she knows how to pull off a more formal business look while still keeping it stylish. We call this lawyer chic, and it's one of Amal's biggest fashion strong suits.
Watch Out, World
This picture is a lot, so let's break it down. First off we have George looking suave as ever in his blazer. Then we've got Amal in her green statement gown with the asymmetrical sleeve and skirt details. Then when looking at it all together we see a couple who could absolutely rule the world if they wanted to, and they'd look great doing it.
Shimmering Pink
Another day, another gala for Amal to show up and blow everyone away with her style. For an event in 2018, she chose a shimmering metallic pink dress with an off-the-shoulder silhouette. What we love about this gown is that from one angle it looks like a full-length sheath dress, but then from the side you see the miniskirt. So chic.
Power Pants
Is there any piece of clothing that conveys more confidence than a white jumpsuit? It says, "I'm not afraid of stains, I don't spill things, I don't care that this is going to be hard to take off in the bathroom. I'm unstoppable." So, it was a powerful choice for Amal to wear to a global media conference.
Did Someone Say Madeline?
This fun dress reminds us a lot of what the girls in the Madeline book series would wear. The book was set in France, and this is a chic French look. Amal was captured wearing this while walking around New York. Take that in for a moment — this is just a casual, everyday outfit for her.
Street Style
This is another candid shot of Amal walking around the streets of New York. It looks like it could belong in a fashion magazine. We're loving this casual look because it has so much personality. Patterned pants are hard enough to pull off, but then she went with a colorful statement jacket. It all works together so well.
Flapper Fringe
The couple was celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Moon landing at this event, but Amal's style was throwing it back to the flapper days with all that tiered fringe. This is one of those dresses that photographs really well, because it's always moving a little bit. Makes for an interesting picture.
Dinner With the Prince
Amal and George aren't just friendly with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, they're also close to Prince Charles. He invited the duo to a dinner at Buckingham Palace in 2019, so Amal obviously dressed to the nines. We love this white dress on her with the asymmetrical cape. And looking closely, her sleeves are bedazzled, which is just so much fun.
Asymmetric Jumpsuit
Another day, another stunning jumpsuit look from Amal. She looks so cool in this blue ensemble with the wide black belt. And what we love about her fashion choices is that she's always playing around with the silhouette — in this case opting for a one-shouldered look. Add to that her cow print clutch, and it's honestly iconic.
'60s Mod
Here's another example of Amal's lawyer chic style. She's modest and professional, but she's also having fun with fashion. This yellow dress and coat are piped with black lines for a very mod '60s look. Could she be wearing it to the office in the 2000s? Yes, but she could also wear it to a Beatles concert in 1964. Whatever works.
Luxurious Velvet
There's something about a velvet gown that just looks and feels expensive. Amal wore this stunning deep red dress to a gala in 2018, and she looks like a model. Seriously, look at her with her flowy hair and effortless smile and chic outfit. She makes everything seem so glam without really even trying. George is a lucky man.
Animal Print
Animal print outfits used to be seen as kind of tacky, but that's changed in recent years. Amal shows one way of wearing the print while still looking classy. She paired her turtleneck leopard dress with a powder blue coat and sleek black accessories. It shouldn't necessarily all work together, but it totally does.
