Britney Spears can’t seem to catch a break. The singer was allegedly slapped by a member of security for the San Antonio Spurs basketball team in Las Vegas on Wednesday night after she attempted to talk to the team’s newest member, Victor Wembanyama, and was apparently "backhanded" across the face.
The story is still developing, but here’s what we know so far.

Britney is a big fan of Victor.
According to TMZ, which initially reported the incident, Britney, husband Sam Asghari, and her manager went for dinner at Catch restaurant at the Aria Resort & Casino on Wednesday night.
Victor was at the restaurant when Spears arrived, and when she saw him there, she wanted to ask him for a photo.
Things got out of hand quickly.

He was photographed signing autographs for fans earlier that same night, according to Page Six, but things weren't as friendly when Britney approached him.
Britney "tapped him on his back, right shoulder," and then Damian Smith, director of team security for the Spurs, "instantly backhanded her," TMZ reported.
She fell to the ground immediately, and her glasses were knocked off.
She did get an apology.
Following the incident, Britney "composed herself and went to her table." Later, she was approached by the security guard, who apologized for what happened.
“You understand how it is when you're being swarmed by fans,” he said to her when he visited Britney at her table.
It was likely a misunderstanding.
According to TMZ, Smith didn’t know who Britney Spears was at the time he slapped her.
Britney's security team spent time talking with the Spurs security team, and afterward, her team filed a report with the Metropolitan Police Department, alleging battery.
Britney was seen leaving Catch in a black hoodie covering her face and with sunglasses on. When she arrived she was swarmed by fans, so she was likely trying to conceal her identity, especially after the incident.

There's no word on how this will play out in the legal system.
TMZ is now reporting that Metro PD is treating the incident as a criminal investigation. Initial reports claimed authorities weren’t treating it as a criminal matter because "Smith was not trying to hurt Britney but rather defend Victor Wembanyama."
The police are taking this as "as serious as a heart attack" and are likely to refer the incident to the district attorney, but that doesn’t mean criminal charges will be filed.
We’ll see what happens as the story unfolds.
