It took over a year, but red carpet events are back, and it seems like celebs have seriously stepped up their style game since we last saw them. Maybe it was spending so much time in lockdown (in lounge clothes) that allowed them to really plan out what they would wear when life returned to normal, but the looks at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival — which wraps up on July 17 — have been out-of-control glam.
The celebrity moms, in particular, wowed on the carpet. They were probably thrilled to have an adult night out where they could get all dressed up and have grown-up conversations and not have to deal with any kid meltdowns. Parenting in 2020 was rough, but we made it through. Now apparently, 2021 is the year of the fashionable return. Here are 15 of our favorite Cannes looks from our fave celeb moms.
Marion Cotillard
French actress Marion Cotillard was at Cannes for her new movie Annette, and she stunned on the red carpet in a glittering silver gown with scalloped detailing. According to Vogue, the dress was a Chanel design, because what else does one wear while in France than something from the house of Ms. Coco Chanel herself?
Jodie Turner-Smith
Jodie Turner-Smith was having a great time at Cannes, showing up for the Stillwater premiere in a gorgeous custom feathered dress by Gucci. But her experience was then marred by a robbery. According to People magazine, Jodie's hotel room was ransacked while she was out, and some of her personal jewelry was stolen.
Jessica Chastain
Jessica Chastain's dramatic tulle gown is a 2019 design from Christian Dior. We can't help but think that the actress originally wanted to wear it to a 2020 event before those were all canceled. If she did save the dress for more than a year, it was definitely well worth the wait with its show-stopping qualities.
Diane Kruger
One of the emerging trends on the Cannes red carpet was black tulle. We saw it with Jessica Chastain and then again with Diane Kruger. The actress stunned on the Everything Went Fine red carpet in a glittering black gown from Armani. She accessorized the outfit with Chaumet earrings and a simple black hair bow.
Maggie Gyllenhaal
Another day, another black tulle gown. Cannes jury member Maggie Gyllenhaal wore this Chanel outfit to the French Dispatch premiere. We love how glam and dramatic the skirt is while the top looks like a casual white blouse. A mix of everyday with the haute couture.
Melanie Laurent
French actress Melanie Laurent (you know her from Inglourious Basterds) was also on the Cannes jury with Maggie Gyllenhaal. Melanie wore this glittery strapless gown to the French Dispatch premiere. It's a Gucci design — one of two by the brand that Melanie wore throughout the fashionable Cannes event.
Jodie Foster
Jodie Foster is an actress who doesn't always love doing the award show/red carpet thing. But perhaps after a year of lockdown she was ready for a big event. She came to the Annette screening at Cannes dressed in a blinged-up white gown from Givenchy. She paired the look with her signature bob.
Christine Chiu
Fashion house Jean-Louis Sabaji is known for its glamorous feathered dresses, like the one that Bling Empire star Christine Chiu wore at Cannes. Her dramatic high-low gown was covered in red feathers, and Christine carried on the theme with red accessories — including her heels and clutch.
Andie MacDowell
When she hit the red carpet for the Everything Went Fine screening, Andie MacDowell looked a little different. It seems that over the last year, she let her natural gray hair grow in, and she showed off her new 'do at Cannes. She looked absolutely stunning, with her hair perfectly complementing her white one-shouldered Versace dress.
Melissa George
At the Bergman Island screening, all eyes were on actress Melissa George. She showed up to the red carpet in a gorgeous pink Grecian-style gown with a dramatic train. The dress is a Dior design last spotted in the French fashion house's spring 2020 collection. A year later, Melissa got to take it for a spin at Cannes.
Tilda Swinton
You can always count on Tilda Swinton to bring her unique sense of style to red carpet events. While promoting her film The French Dispatch, she wore this blue Haider Ackermann suit. It's a bold color and a bold look, but so chic. Tilda's outfits can sometimes be hit or miss because she does have such an original fashion sense, but we can all agree she looks great here.
Candice Swanepoel
The model always looks super glam when she hits the red carpet, but we're partial to the slinky, backless cream-colored dress she wore to the Everything Went Fine premiere. The gown was a design from Etro, an Italian fashion house typically known for its paisley outfits. But it seems that it can do solid-color looks just as well.
Vanessa Paradis
French actress Vanessa Paradis attended Cannes to support her husband, Samuel Benchetrit. He directed the film Love Songs for Tough Guys, and Vanessa was right there on the red carpet with him. But Vanessa is more than just a director's wife — or Johnny Depp's ex. She's also a model, and she knew how to turn heads in her pink floral dress from Chanel.
Coco Rocha
As a fashion model, Coco Rocha knows how to work a camera. She didn't just pose in her Cannes dress, she slayed in it. The mom of three wore an off-the-shoulder burgundy dress from Dior to the premiere of Aline, the Voice of Love. She paired the look with matching burgundy makeup and a complicated braided hairstyle.
Isabelle Huppert
At the Aline, the Voice of Love premiere, actress Isabelle Huppert wowed in a black gown with a jeweled top. The dress is a Louis Vuitton design that Isabelle paired with glittering Chopard earrings. It was just the right amount of bling without being gaudy — not that Louis Vuitton or Chopard could ever be gaudy.
