Thanks to Generation Z, everything we loved in the 1990s is once again popular, including our '90s legends. Some might say that the decade was the heyday of supermodels — and honestly, we agree. Print ruled and fashion magazines were sold at every convenience store and newsstand all over the world, and elaborate runway shows were regularly aired on television. And that's not to mention the countless commercials and music videos that '90s-era models starred in. Really, you couldn't escape their picture-perfect faces — or their enviable bodies — if you tried.
Those same models who became household names in the '90s are still the images everybody around the world conjures up when they hear the word "supermodel." Sure, people know Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid, but they're arguably more famous for their influencer status than their modeling careers.
Icons like Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, and Naomi Campbell still rule the runways in many of our minds today, in large part because they were just so dang fierce. From their killer confidence to their megawatt smiles and impossibly long legs, these women set the bar high.
But where are they now, 30-some years later? Though it's hard to believe, most of them are in their 50s (or close to it), raising families and juggling a slew of businesses and endorsement deals. Keep scrolling to see what your favorite '90s supermodels look like now and what she's been up to lately.
Then: Cindy Crawford
With her long, hourglass figure, megawatt smile, and that signature beauty mark, Cindy Crawford pretty much set the standard for supermodels back in the day. She was the golden girl, and by the mid '90s she was known around the world. From high-fashion runways to sitcom cameos, she was literally everywhere. And seriously, who didn't own copies of her workout videos hoping to sweat their way to her killer body?
Now: Cindy Crawford
Today, at 55 years old, Cindy is just as gorgeous as ever, but it's her 19-year-old daughter, Kaia Gerber, who now struts the runways. Cindy herself regularly appears on the talk TV and podcast circuit, as well as in commercials and magazines for midlifers. Plus, she continues to rake in millions from various endorsement deals.
Then: Tyra Banks
Tyra Banks has walked plenty of runways, but her voluptuous body meant that lingerie and bikini shoots — especially the ones she did for Victoria's Secret — eventually became her bread and butter. She parlayed modeling into an acting career that added both TV and film appearances to her resume, including a stint on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and a starring role in the 2000 Disney film Life-Size and its sequel.
Now: Tyra Banks
Tyra's career peaked in the early 2000s after she created the hit reality competition series America's Next Top Model, which ran for a whopping 24 seasons. Now a mom of one and firmly established as a TV personality, she's served as host on both America's Got Talent and Dancing With the Stars since ANTM ended.
Then: Heidi Klum
Once known as "The Body," Heidi Klum was a fixture on designer runways throughout the '90s and early 2000s. She eventually joined Tyra and others as both a print and runway model for Victoria's Secret, becoming the first German model to reach Angel status. She was known around the world and often made television appearances.
Now: Heidi Klum
Since her modeling prime, Heidi, who has four children, has become a force in the reality TV competition genre. It all started with Project Runway, which she cohosted with Tim Gunn from 2004 to 2018. Now, she hosts Amazon's Making the Cut with Tim, as well as America's Got Talent. She also serves as a mentor to younger models, including Winnie Harlow and her own teenaged daughter, Leni.
Then: Naomi Campbell
Naomi Campbell spent the majority of her career walking runways and posing for the pages of high-fashion magazines. When she wasn't modeling, she earned herself a questionable reputation marked by what might be described as diva behavior. The stunning Brit's career was relatively untarnished, though, thanks to her tremendous talent.
Now: Naomi Campbell
At 51, Naomi appears nearly unchanged from her '90s prime. She's still featured in fashion magazines on the regular and she even walks the runway on occasion. Naomi can now add mom to her list of incredible accomplishments. She welcomed her first child, a baby girl, in May 2021, though she has not spoken publicly about whether she carried the baby herself.
Then: Linda Evangelista
Canadian model Linda Evangelista walked alongside Cindy and Naomi on countless fashion runways back in the '90s. With more than 700 magazine covers under her belt, though, her print work is what she's most famous for. Her dark hair and piercing blue eyes made her a beauty icon.
Now: Linda Evangelista
These days, 56-year-old Linda is living her best life as a mother and a grandmother, traveling the world and engaging in social activism. But she's also an entrepreneur. In 2014, she cofounded an anti-aging skin care line called Erasa XEF 30 with former Estée Lauder exec Jules Zecchino.
Then: Christy Turlington
Christy Turlington's nearly perfectly symmetrical face and high cheekbones made her a force in the beauty modeling business in the '90s. She also sashayed down runways for designers such as Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs. Still, she's perhaps best known as the face of Maybelline cosmetics, which she's worked for for decades.
Now: Christy Turlington
These days, the 52-year-old mom of two spends most of her time working as an activist with an organization called Every Mom Counts, which she founded herself with the goal of promoting safe pregnancy and childbirth for all women around the world. She still makes time to routinely grace the covers of glossy magazines such as Elle and Harper's Bazaar.
Then: Kate Moss
British model Kate Moss ushered in the era of "heroine chic," with her boyish, waif-like figure and gaunt facial features. Her fame rose at the tail end of the '90s and the supermodel era, and she quickly became a poster girl for the ultra-skinny physique that pervaded fashion at that time.
Now: Kate Moss
At 46, Kate still models but rarely hits the runway. (Her 18-year-old daughter, Lila, does most of the modeling these days.) Kate actually started her own agency to which her daughter and a slew of other models and entertainers, including Rita Ora and Ella Richards, are signed. She also creates fashion and jewelry collections on occasion.
Then: Claudia Schiffer
Often compared to Old Hollywood icon Brigitte Bardot, thanks to her sultry facial features, Claudia Schiffer was an incredibly popular model in the '90s, appearing on more than 1,000 magazine covers, a feat which earned her a Guinness World Record. She segued her modeling career into a gig as a fitness TV guru in the late '90s. And in 2003, she made a very memorable cameo in the Christmas classic Love Actually.
Now: Claudia Schiffer
With an estimated net worth of $60 million, the 50-year-old model doesn't have to do much these days, but she still models for Chanel and Être Cécile, among others, and she continues to be a regular both on the covers and in the pages of magazines such as Elle and Vogue.
Then: Elle Macpherson
Back in the '90s, the fresh-faced Australian model Elle Macpherson was often pitted against Heidi thanks to their similar body types. In fact, she was also nicknamed "The Body," and the debate is still going on over who truly deserves the title. Her modeling clout helped her launch a successful career in Hollywood that saw her star in films including Batman & Robin and even nab a recurring role on Friends.
Now: Elle Macpherson
Lately, Elle mostly focuses on promoting health and wellness. She founded the brand WelleCo, which offers a wide variety of supplements from protein powders to sleep aids. She also still heads the lingerie line Elle Macpherson Body. The 57-year-old has two children, ages 22 and 17.
Then: Helena Christensen
Helena Christensen is another '90s icon who was well-known thanks to her nontraditional looks. Most famously, the Danish supermodel was once a Victoria's Secret Angel, but many also remember her for starring in the very steamy 1989 music video for Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" song.
Now: Helena Christensen
These days, Helena is still just as sexy as ever and often works with swimsuit and lingerie brands. The 52-year-old mom is also an ambassador to the UN Refugee Agency and she owns her own resortwear company called Staerk & Christensen, which offers swimsuits, cover-ups, shoes, and accessories designed to "celebrate the female body."
