They say the camera adds 10 pounds, but it seems to add several inches, too. Many of these celebrities may seem tall on the screen, but they are actually pretty short in real life.
The average height for men in the US is 5'9", but it often seems like Hollywood casts much taller than that, with many leading men coming in around 6 feet and above. As for women, the average height in the US is 5'4", which most of these female celebs don't meet by a long shot.
Thanks to movie magic, such as having actors wear high heels or stand on apple crates for kissing scenes, our sense of how tall anyone is can be warped. The celebs on this list may surprise even their biggest fans. And even the stars we already knew aren't giants are surprisingly shorter than we thought.

Kit Harington
Height: 5'8"
We barely noticed how short Kit Harington is in Game of Thrones. His character, Jon Snow, is one of the shortest of his group of on-screen siblings. Only costar Maisie Williams is shorter at 5'1". But Sophie Turner is taller than Kit — she's 5'9. And we can't forget about Isaac Hempstead Wright, who plays Bran. He stands at 5'11".
Jada Pinkett Smith
Height: 5'0"
Jada Pinkett Smith has what we would call a tall personality — she's tough and to the point — so we never would have guessed that she's only 5 feet tall. But seeing her next to husband Will Smith, it all makes sense. Will towers over her because he's 6'2". Jada's kids are taller than her, too. Jaden and Willow both come in at 5'7".
Nick & Joe Jonas
Height: both are 5'7"
The Jonas brothers have a big stage presence, but they aren't particularly mighty in stature. So how tall are Joe and Nick, exactly? Both are only 5'7", while Kevin is the tallest of the group at 5'9". A few years ago, Nick actually fired back at a fan who called him short. The fan posted a photo he'd taken with Nick and captioned it, "@nickjonas you need a few more inches bruhh?" Nick snapped back: "You need some manners, 'bruh.' I didn't need to stop to take that picture with you. Just rude. Very rude."
Kristin Chenoweth
Height: 4'11"
Actress and Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth has a bubbly personality that sometimes distracts from her short stature. We didn't expect Kristin to be a giant or anything, but we were surprised to learn that she comes in at under 5 feet. Here she is with her fiancé, Josh Bryant. He looks like he's at least a foot taller than her, if not more.
Lenny Kravitz
Height: 5'9"
For a guy, Lenny Kravitz is on the shorter side, especially when he's compared with his ex-wife Lisa Bonet's ex (and his friend) Jason Momoa, who is a towering 6'4". Considering that Lenny is 5'9" and Lisa is only 5'2", it's not surprising that their daughter, Zoë Kravitz, also is on the shorter end of the height spectrum. The Big Little Lies star is 5'2", just like her mother.

Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen
Height: Mary-Kate is 5'2" and Ashley is 5'1"
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are fraternal twins, and one big difference between them is their height. Mary-Kate outmeasures her sis by an inch. But they're both pretty short, especially when standing next to their little (in age only) sister, Elizabeth Olsen. Elizabeth is 5'6", which isn't particularly tall either, but her short sisters make her seem like a giant.
Zac Efron

It's sometimes hard for short male actors to make it as romantic leads, but that's what Zac Efron has managed to do. What he lacks in height, he makes up for in abs, OK? Here's Zac with his Baywatch costar David Hasselhoff, who towers over Zac at a whopping 6'4". Zac was also up against Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson — who is 6'5" — in that movie.
Bindi Irwin
Height: 4'11"
The late Steve Irwin's daughter has shouldered his massive legacy and continued his conservation work, which may make people think she's tall. However, Bindi Irwin doesn't quite reach 5 feet at her height of 4'11". Her dad was an entire foot taller, and her mom, Terri Irwin, is 5'4". Bindi's brother, Robert, is only 19, so he may not be done growing. But he's already more than a head taller than his big sis.
Bruno Mars

Even though he's often the shortest person in the room, singer Bruno Mars is doing just fine for himself. He doesn't need those extra inches when he's got that hefty bank account balance (his net worth is an estimated $175 million). And he's taller than his girlfriend, model Jessica Caban, who is 5'4", so he's doing great.
Daniel Radcliffe
Height: 5'5"
When the Harry Potter actors were cast as kids, they were all around the same height. But as they got older, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson kept growing, and Daniel Radcliffe, well, didn't. None of the three of them is exceptionally tall, but Rupert is taller than Daniel at 5'8". Emma, meanwhile, is the same height as Daniel, but in her heels she easily clears several inches on him.
Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi

Perhaps we thought Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi was taller because of the signature bump she was always putting in her hair on Jersey Shore. But no, Snooki is one of the shortest celebs around — especially compared with other cast members. Paul "Pauly D" DelVecchio is more than a foot taller at 5'10", and Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino is 5'11". Even Jenny "JWoww" Farley is nearly a foot taller than Snooki at 5'7".

Simon Cowell
Height: 5'9"
Is his height the reason Simon is so surly all the time? His "mean judge" persona also makes him scarier, which makes him seem bigger than he is. But in actuality, he's pretty short for a male celeb. His fellow America's Got Talent judge Heidi Klum, on the other hand, towers over him. She's also 5'9", but in heels she can easily clear 6 feet.
Kim Kardashian
Height: 5'2"
The differences between the Kardashian-Jenner sisters when it comes to their height are pretty wild to see. Kourtney Kardashian is the oldest but also the shortest at 5'1". And Kim Kardashian is only an inch taller than her. Then we have Khloé Kardashian and Kendall Jenner, who are both 5'10", and they make their sisters look so tiny. In the middle of the pack is Kylie Jenner at 5'6". Of course, they all wear heels, which changes their height from event to event.
Kanye West
Height: 5'8"
Perhaps we thought Kanye West was taller because he's got several inches on ex-wife Kim Kardashian, and he always towered over her in pics of them together. But he's actually on the shorter side at just 5'8". His height was really noticeable at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards when he stood next to Taylor Swift. At 5'11", she's tall for a woman. Because they're still kind of feuding, that fact must bring Taylor a lot of joy.
Tom Cruise
Height: 5'7"
Because he's an action movie star, we just assumed Tom Cruise was tall. But when he was married to Katie Holmes, it became evident that he was even shorter than his wife. (She's 5'9".) Guess movie magic really works — it's been rumored that Tom wears lifts in his shoes, among other tricks — because we were definitely fooled into thinking Tom was pretty tall, or at least that he isn't short.

Kevin Hart

At just over 5 feet tall, it's no wonder that Kevin Hart is visibly shorter than his wife, Eniko Parish, who stands at 5'7". When he's by himself — or making us laugh in one of his movies — it's easy to forget his short stature.
