With the 2022 elections just around the corner, it's never felt like a more important time to show up for the causes we care about. November 8 is a time when we can all weigh in on issues that affect our whole families, from abortion rights to gun control to finally pushing forward measures that really address global climate change. As moms, we know that we vote for ourselves but we also vote for our kids. We all want our children to grow up in a world that is safe and where they can dream of a big future.
And while celebrity moms aren't like us in a whole lot of ways (multiple nannies on call, a glam squad to make sure they always look perfectly rested, and access to private planes and the best schools, just to name a few), they too want to ensure that their kids have a bright future. While some celebrities choose to stay silent on matters of politics or other forms of activism to avoid alientating fans who might disagree with them, some aren't afraid to take a bold stand.
Here, we're highlighting 15 celebrity moms who are using their fame, power, time, and money to support causes that they are passionate about. May these famous women serve as inspiration to remember to get to the polls this year and to advocate for the causes that matter.
Katy Perry
Martha Stewart
Martha Stewart was one of the many celebrities who used their fame to promote the importance of getting the COVID-19 vaccination. At the time, she shared, "I am so proud of and grateful to the doctors, nurses, and medical staff who are wading through the red tape and confusion of the distribution of these very important vaccines. I am excited to have received my dosage and look forward to the booster."
Mandy Moore
Mandy Moore, who recently welcomed her second child, has been an activist for several issues affecting children, including the importance of safe gun control regulations. After yet another tragic mass shooting, she argued, "Any member of Congress who is not actively in the fight for gun safety reform is not fit to represent us. Period. The inaction is reprehensible. Two mass shootings in 24 hours? We simply can't stand by and let this continue to happen."
Beyoncé
There are few celebs who have a bigger platform than the Queen B herself. Beyoncé has been an advocate for many issues, including LGBT rights. In addition to casting same-sex couples and trans individuls in her music videos and marketing materials for her Ivy Park line, she also spoke words of encouragement during a 2020 speech. "If you're part of a group that's called 'other' — a group that does not get the chance to be center stage — build your own stage, and make them see you. Your queerness is beautiful, your Blackness is beautiful, your compassion, your understanding, your fight for people who may be different from you is beautiful."
Beyoncé has been honored for her work several times, including winning the award for "Most Charitable Celeb" by DoSomething.org.
Gigi Hadid
Supermodel mama Gigi Hadid puts her money where her activism is. In March 2022, she announced that she would donate all of her earnings from fall 2022 runway shows to causes she cares about. "Having a set Fashion Month schedule has meant that my colleagues and I often present new fashion collections during heartbreaking and traumatic times in history. We don't have control over most of our work schedules, but we would like to walk 'for' something," she explained.
"I am pledging to donate my earnings from the fall 2022 shows to aid those suffering from the war in Ukraine, as well as continuing to support those experiencing the same in Palestine. Our eyes and hearts must be open to all human injustice. May we all see each other as brothers and sisters, beyond politics, beyond race, beyond religion. At the the end of the day, innocent lives pay for war — not leaders."
