Chris Hemsworth Is Stepping Back From His Hollywood Career Due to Alzheimer’s Disease Risk

Fans of Chris Hemsworth may not get too many more opportunities to see the hunky action star at work. According to an insider, Chris' upcoming filming schedule is wide open after the Thor star announced he would be stepping back from his Hollywood career following some unexpected medical news.

Chris got the upsetting news while filming a National Geographic series.

In 2022, Chris released a docuseries he'd been working on in conjunction with National Geographic and Disney+. After having bloodwork done for the program, Chris was told he is "between eight and 10 times" likelier to develop Alzheimer's than the general population because he is one of only 2% to 3% of people with two copies of the gene APOE4.

Chris told Vanity Fair in November 2022 that the news "triggered something in me to want to take some time off."

At the time, he said he would just be slowing down.

Chris told the magazine that he wasn't "talking about retiring by any means" and that he instead planned to spend more time with his wife, Elsa Pataky, and their three children, 10-year-old India and 9-year-old twins Tristan and Sasha.

But it now appears that Chris' time off may be more permanent than he first let on.

Chris has just a few projects in the pipeline at the moment.

He is set to reprise his Thor character in another Avengers installment and then he will begin filming an untitled Hulk Hogan biopic. But after those gigs, his calendar is completely clear β€” and it may stay that way. A source told Page Six that this is because "he doesn't plan to take on many roles because of [learning about his high risk for] Alzheimer's."

We already knew Chris was taking the news that he's at high risk for developing Alzheimer's seriously, but it sounds like it's really given him a pretty major wakeup call.

"Most of us, we like to avoid speaking about death," he told Vanity Fair last year. "Then to all of a sudden be told some big indicators are actually pointing to this as the route which is going to happen, the reality of it sinks in. Your own mortality."

We hope Chris is getting to spend a lot of time with his loved ones.

Although he is in a great position to deal with whatever does end up happening with his health β€” his wealth and celebrity status should give him access to the best medical care in the world β€” this still has to be a terrifying time for him and his family.

We hope they're able to at least make the most of the time they'll have together without worrying too much about what the future may hold. We'll miss Chris if he leaves Hollywood for good, but we know that whatever he decides will be the best choice for him and his family.
