What to Know
Collin Gosselin is making it clear that he’s not afraid of his mother, Kate Gosselin. The 22-year-old former reality TV star and his mother have been estranged for years after she sent him to a behavioral health institution. In the last few years, with the support of dad Jon Gosselin, Collin has spoken out about his difficult childhood, growing up in the spotlight, his parents’ divorce, and how the fallout from that impacted his relationship with his mother. Now, he’s sharing his story in a raw memoir that promises to give insight into the parts of his life lived off camera over the years. And he knows what kind of impact those revelations will have on Kate.
He shared a pointed message for her on Instagram.

On June 27, 2026, he shared a headline from The New York Post about Kate in his Instagram Story, The Independent reported.
“Kate Gosselin ‘spiraling’ ahead of estranged son Collin’s bombshell memoir: ‘She knows it’s about to hit the fan,’” the headline read. According to the outlet, the Post article cited a source quoted by the Daily Mail, who said Kate had “no idea this book was in the works.”
In the Story, Collin blurred his mother’s face and added a comment that read “What’s done in darkness will always come to light.”
Collin Gosselin announced his memoir on social media.
He shared the cover of his upcoming memoir, In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood via Instagram on June 17.
“For a long time, I wasn’t sure I’d ever tell this story,” he captioned the post. “Growing up, millions of people watched my life on television. People felt like they knew me. They knew my family. They watched me grow up. But there was so much they never saw. For years, I kept those experiences to myself. Some because I was afraid. Some because I didn’t think anyone would believe me. And some because I just wasn’t ready.”
The book’s cover is a professional picture of Kate covering the mouth of a young Collin while they’re surrounded by his siblings.
“Writing this book forced me to revisit some of the hardest moments of my life, but it also gave me something I’ve been searching for for a long time: my voice. This isn’t the story people think they know. It’s the story I’ve lived,” he wrote.
His stepmom, Stephanie Gosselin, commented on the post, among many others. “Soooo proud of you. What an accomplishment!! Amongst so many!! Your future is so bright. You have a strong support system. And always will. We love you,” she wrote.
Collin challenged his mother to dispute his accusations.
Shortly after announcing his book, Collin Gosselin appeared on Strange McKnight’s YouTube channel for an interview about the memoir and his messy childhood. During the conversation, he discussed the allegation that Kate once used zip ties on his wrists and ankles and put him in the basement.
“But I’m not going to talk much on that because I’m putting all this in a tell- all that I’m writing right now and we will be going into detail on every single thing,” he said after telling the story.
“However, speaking on the topic of zip ties, if I may add a thought, I know you’re probably going to ask about this, but I did just say on social media that I would like to invite my mom to do a lie detector test,” he continued. “And that would be one of the questions, mom, if you’re listening to this, we would ask about the zip ties.”
