Twitter is in the middle of a nostalgia-fueled debate about the 1991 movie, Father of the Bride — specifically when it comes to the parents in the movie. Upon the realization that the characters played by Steve Martin and Diane Keaton are supposed to be 45 years old in the movie, fans are having a hard time processing, knowing what someone in their 40s actually looks like now that they're all grown up.
Jessica Ellis noticed that the middle-aged couple's wardrobe didn't line up with modern times.
"An unbelievable thing that has changed in 30 years is that in 1995, this was supposed to be what 45-year-olds looked like," she captioned a photo of a pearl-wearing Diane and a white-haired Steve.
Other Twitter users agreed that the well-to-do couple did seem a bit frumpy for 45, especially by today's standards, and shared their hilarious takes on it.
The '90s may have just been a different time in the world of fashion.
Several people pointed out that the world was just a different place back then, with one Twitter user mentioning that Jason Alexander was 29 when he started filming Seinfeld.
"Rue McClanahan was 51 when The Golden Girls started, which is younger than Jennifer Lopez is now," another person tweeted.
It's worth mentioning that J.Lo just posed nude for a her latest J.Lo Beauty drop, which is something we can totally picture Blanche doing at that age.
Some felt that eventually, all our favorite outfits will be considered 'old people' attire.
Another unfortunate truth is that eventually everything goes out of style — yes, even our favorite go-to looks.
"What if I told you our skinny jeans, Converse, and awesome t-shirt collections will be the new Old People wardrobe?" one person wrote in response.
Another person confirmed that this was already the look for people of a certain age. "That is my 'old people' wardrobe," the Twitter user wrote in part before noting they're 45 years old.
The point remains that this is simply not how 45-year-olds dress today.
We can think of several celebs in their 40s, and none of them would be donning matching sweater sets and pearls at the ripe old age of 45. But for those of us who were kids the first time we watched Father of the Bride, it all seemed to check out at the time!
And we're not the only ones. One Twitter user's hilarious response to Jessica's post was simply this undeniable truth: "Kim Kardashian is 42."
Changing fashion trends and better self-care products are likely to blame for the shift.
Several people pointed out that we have a lot more access to better quality information these days, thanks to the internet. Anti-smoking campaigns and spreading the word about the importance of sunscreen use have all helped slow some of the signs of aging in the last couple of decades.
We think it's safe to say that we speak on behalf of the next generation entering our 40s when we say thanks for that.
That being said, it's likely that these looks will come back into style soon enough … whether we want them to or not!
