Grimes says 'the love of her life' is becoming 'unrecognizable.'
Though the details surrounding Grimes and Elon’s custody battle remain unclear, Grimes opened up about the impact it has had on her in a somewhat cryptic post on X, the platform that Elon now owns. In the post, Grimes wrote, “Spent a year locked in battle in a state with terrible mothers rights having my Instagram posts and modeling used as reasons I shouldn’t have my kids.”
She also described “fighting and detaching from the love of my life as he becomes unrecognizable to me, with a fraction of his resources (or iq/strategy experience), all the while I didn’t see one of my babies for 5 months.”
To some, the post seemed to reference Elon Musk’s right-wing politics and support for Donald Trump. Trump recently announced that Elon will lead the new Department of Government Efficiency alongside former presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy.
Grimes focused on how the things she's been through have impacted her art.
The challenges that Grimes opened up about in her X post are simply the ones that “can be said publicly.” She added that “most of my experience these last years should remain behind closed doors.” While she has been dealing with a lot, she feels “on top of the world right now,” she wrote.
“Poetry and pure raw emotion are pouring out of my soul at a rate I’ve never known, and I’m improving deeply as a producer past the technical and back to the art after now knowing my craft so much better,” she explained in the post.

In a separate post, she revealed that she almost went 'bankrupt' fighting for her children.
Grimes shares 4-year-old son X Γ A-12, 3-year-old daughter Exa Dark SiderΓ¦l, and son Techno Mechanicus with Elon. While “fighting” for her kids, she almost went “bankrupt,” she revealed when responding to another post on X. In her original post, Grimes wrote, “The best part of being an artist is that every time u reap some kind of untold horror that u sowed by doing something insane u know u can just sow it back into inspiration and reap art.”
A fan asked why she couldn’t work on her music during her custody battle. “Because the threat of losing ur kids while going bankrupt fighting for them is not very conducive to creative thoughts,” Grimes responded. “I just slept and cried every minute I wasn’t explicitly fighting for my kids during that year.”
Previously, Grimes and her mom used X to try to reach Elon Musk.
At times, Grimes seemingly could not even reach Elon and took to X in attempt to communicate about their children. In September 2023, Grimes asked Elon to let her see her son in a now-deleted X post. Per the Los Angeles Times, she wrote, “Tell Shivon to unblock me and tell Elon to let me see my son or plz respond to my lawyer.” Grimes was referring to Shivon Zilis, the mother of three of Elon’s other children.
In July 2024, Grimes’ mom, Sandy Garossino, tried to contact Elon on X. “Iβm writing here as the only way I have to reach you,” Sandy wrote at the time. “As you know, my 93-year0old mother is now at end-of-life palliative care.” She explained that her mother wanted to see Grimes’ children “one last time.”
While the kids were supposed to visit their great grandmother, Elon was allegedly “withholding them and their needed passport documents from [Grimes].”
“It was even more troubling to see you and X on television at the Olympics in Paris yesterday, after your DC trip earlier in the week,” Sandy added. “Where are the other children, and with whom?”
Earlier this month, People magazine reported that Grimes and Elon Musk were house hunting together.
Grimes and Elon began dating in 2018 and continued to have an on-again, off-again relationship for several years. In 2022, Grimes revealed that she and Elon were no longer together, but described him as “my best friend and the love of my life.” Though her latest X posts suggest that her feelings have changed, People recently reported that Grimes and Elon Musk were searching for a home together, according to an unnamed source.
Elon reportedly wants all of his children (he has at least 11) and their mothers to live in adjoining properties.
