Jason Kelce Addresses Heated Exchange With Fan Who Directed Homophobic Slur at Travis

Jason Kelce has spoken up about a viral video of him throwing a football fan’s phone onto the ground. The former Philadelphia Eagles center visited State College, Pennsylvania, for the Ohio State-Penn State football game on Saturday, November 2. While walking on Penn State’s campus, a football fan approached Jason and made an offensive comment about his brother, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.

Jason is admittedly 'not proud' of what happened.

After the video of the exchange began circulating on social media, Jason addressed the controversy during ESPN’s Monday Night Football pregame show, Monday Night Countdown, on November 4. He acknowledged that everyone has probably seen the video by now, and that it’s not something he’s proud of.

“I think everybody has seen on social media what happened this week,” he said. “Listen, I’m not happy with anything that took place. I’m not proud of it.”

He went on to explain how his actions during that moment did not align with his values.

Ultimately, the reason he’s not proud of his reaction to the offensive comments is because his actions during that moment did not align with his values.

“In a heated moment I chose to greet hate with hate, and I just don’t think that’s a productive thing, I really don’t,” Jason explained. “I don’t think it leads to discourse and it’s the right way to go about things. In that moment I fell down to a level that I shouldn’t have.”

“The bottom line is, I try to live my life by the golden rule. That’s what I’ve always been taught,” he continued. “I try to treat people with common decency and respect, and I’m going to keep doing that moving forward.”

He smashed the football fan's phone after the fan made a comment about his brother.

While Jason, who is now an analyst for ESPN, was on campus over the weekend, a football fan insulted his brother, Travis, and used a homophobic slur to do so.

“Hey, Kelce. How does it feel your brother’s a f—– dating Taylor Swift?” the football fan said to Jason. Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift have been dating since 2023.

In response, Jason grabbed the football fan's phone.

In a video shared on X, Jason grabs the football fan’s phone and forcefully throws it on the ground before picking it up again. Another video shared on X shows what happened from a different angle. In that video, the football fan who directed the homophobic slur at Jason appears to be following closely behind Jason and filming him.

On social media, many people sided with Jason.

Although Jason was not proud of what happened that day, some people on social media defended him.

One person on X actually thanked Jason for “not only for standing up for his family and Taylor Nation, but also for every person, gay or straight, who has ever had a homophobic slur lobbed at them by an insecure man child.”

Another person on the platform called Jason’s response “justified, restrained, and appropriate.”

Someone else joked: “Guys, please stop making posts supporting @JasonKelce smashing that kid’s phone. My thumb hurts and I can’t like them all.”
