Jessica Simpson has released a new song, and it might explain why she and her husband Eric Johnson split up. Divorce rumors had been circulating for months before Jessica and Eric eventually announced that they were separated and “navigating a painful situation.” Now, Jessica’s new song has fans wondering if that painful situation involved infidelity.
The lyrics suggest that Jessica’s husband cheated on her.
Of course, musicians can draw inspiration from a number of experiences and sources — including past experiences. Jessica’s new song is clearly about cheating, but it’s not necessarily about her current marriage. However, the timing has led some fans to believe she might be singing about her estranged husband.
“What we had was magic/Now you made it tragic/Giving her what you gave to me/Now the well that you drink from’s empty/Your weakness made me lonely,” she sings on the track, which is called “Leave.”
“Unholy matrimony/Did you do to her what you did to me? Was she on her knees?” she continues.
‘Looks like it may be about leaving behind Mr. Eric,’ one fan commented.
Jessica shared the single on Instagram, and fans celebrated her comeback. Prior to her upcoming album, which is set to come out on March 21, Jessica hadn’t released an album since 2009.
“Jessica I have missed your music so much!” one fan wrote on Instagram.
“These lyrics are savage 🔥,” a second fan commented.
“Wow these words!” a third fan wrote. “Wonder if this is about Eric.”
Jessica’s album was inspired by heartbreak.
Writing about love and heartbreak is not unusual, so it’s no surprise that the “painful situation” in Jessica’s marriage has reportedly provided her with inspiration as she returns to music. In January, a source told Page Six that Jessica “has been working on new music for a while, but with everything going on now, she feels it’s the perfect time to go full force with it.”
The insider claimed that Jessica often writes in a journal, and some of her journal entries provided inspiration for her album. “A few entries have evolved into songs about heartbreak and resilience. It’s been a very creative, albeit heartbreaking, time for her,” the source said.
She also hinted at heartbreak when she teased the album in November.
Jessica had already sparked divorce rumors before promoting her new music, but posts about her new album intensified those rumors. “This comeback is personal, it’s an apology to myself for putting up with everything I did not deserve,” Jessica wrote on Instagram on November 11, 2024. Some fans thought the post seemed like a “breakup post.”
“So you’re getting divorced,” one fan concluded after reading Jessica’s caption.
Another fan questioned whether Jessica’s husband had cheated even then, writing, “If this is so, don’t worry, as smart and beautiful as you are there will be another man to appreciate you.”
In January, Jessica confirmed their separation.
Jessica and Eric, a former NFL player, are currently separated after 10 years of marriage.
“Eric and I have been living separately navigating a painful situation in our marriage,” Jessica said in a statement shared with People. “Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them. We are grateful for all of the love and support that has been coming our way, and appreciate privacy right now as we work through this as a family.”
