This year has been one of many unexpected celebrity breakups, and now, we're getting a bit more insight into what might have gone wrong behind the scenes for Joshua Jackson and Jodie Turner-Smith after the actress filed for divorce this week. According to sources close to the estranged couple, Joshua is "heartbroken" about Jodie's decision to end their marriage — in fact, it appears he might have been just as surprised as the rest of the world was to find out that they were splitting up.

It sounds like the split was totally Jodie's decision.

A source told OK! Magazine that the former Dawson's Creek star didn't seem to have seen this news coming.
"Joshua is heartbroken over the impending divorce, he always thought that he would be married and grow old with his family, and everything would be happily ever after," the source said. "He had the dream scenario in his mind, and Jodie was his person and the person he thought he would be with forever."
He was 'caught off guard' by this new development in their marriage.
Another insider told Us Weekly that Joshua wasn't expecting this, which makes sense, considering that they attended a New York Fashion Week event together on September 12 — one day before September 13, the date that Jodie declared their separation officially began in the divorce filing.
"They had their issues, as many couples do — especially two busy actors who are also juggling a child. Joshua obviously didn’t realize it was this bad, that Jodie was this unhappy," the source said.
Even their friends are surprised this is happening.
The insider said the couple's closest friends are "baffled" by the divorce news and are even hoping that they could still work this out.
"They became glued to each other after the first night they met, and then parenthood soon followed," the person shared. "It was a huge lifestyle change, especially for a free spirit like Jodie. But they seemed so devoted to each other, so everyone is shaking their heads."
Still, the insider added that Jodie is "quite sure" she wants to move forward with the split.
Hectic work schedules may have played a role in the breakup.

Yet another source told Entertainment Tonight that the couple had a hard time managing their relationship while they were both busy working in different places last year.
"They tried to make things work and were taking steps to help their relationship and deal with managing their busy schedules. From an outside perspective, things looked great for a while, but privately, they were slowly growing apart," that source said.

Now, they're focusing on their daughter as they navigate this change.
Jodie and Joshua share a daughter, 3-year-old Juno, and it sounds like they are committed to co-parenting her as they separate their lives.
"They are trying to be amicable as they move forward with their divorce and trying to avoid any feelings of animosity," the insider said, per Entertainment Tonight. "They're both respectful of each other and focused on co-parenting their daughter. They want to have a positive relationship for her sake and for themselves."
