Things were very different for Meghan Markle while she was still a working royal, and now, she's opening up about one of the moments that made headlines during that time. While making an appearance at a brand-new bookstore this week, Meghan admitted she felt "uncomfortable" when she snuck into New York City in 2019 to watch longtime friend Serena Williams compete at the US Open — a time when she said the only thing she wanted was to feel safe.

Meghan spoke at the opening of a bookstore called Godmothers.
According to Town & Country, Meghan surprised those who attended the California bookstore's opening weekend by speaking in front of the crowd on Saturday. While talking to the crowd, she shared a story that highlighted how much stores like this one mean to her.
"For me, sneaking to New York five years ago was a really big deal," she said. "I was still so uncomfortable being out in the world. The safety of what I was craving, I knew I could find in a bookstore."
Meghan was referring to a trip she secretly made to the US in 2019.
At the time, Meghan and Prince Harry were still new parents to their son, Archie, and still very much working for The Firm. Knowing what we know now about how life was behind the scenes for the Sussexes at that point, it's no wonder Meghan was feeling stressed while traveling, especially if she was hoping not to be seen.
She wasn't able to stay at the bookstore opening for very long.
Though Town & Country reported that Meghan did spend some time speaking with fellow guests, which included Oprah Winfrey, she had to make an early exit.
"I’ve got to make dinner for the kids," she said before leaving.

Meghan has been busy lately.
When she's not supporting new businesses in her community, she's preparing to launch her own. According to what a source told People recently, Meghan is still hard at work getting ready to reveal American Riviera Orchard to the world, despite rumors that she has been struggling to find a CEO for the company.
Her life looks very different these days.
But after everything Meghan and Harry have been through, it seems like that's probably for the best. Besides, this nonroyal life means she gets to appear at a neighborhood bookstore and be home in time to make her kids dinner, so how can anyone argue with that?
