Since Prince Harry’s autobiography, Spare, was released, we’ve been learning more about his side of the drama that’s unfolded in his family over the past six years. He’s been able to clear up a lot of misconceptions, set his record straight, and in one instance, he confirmed a rumor that he and Meghan Markle committed a wedding guest faux pas. People aren’t happy about their social blunder.
Prince Harry shared the story about how he announced he and Meghan were expecting their first child.
Harry shared that after his 2018 wedding with Meghan, the two hoped to start a family pretty quickly afterward, according to People.
A few months later their dreams came true, and they decided on how to share the news with their family.
The plan was to tell the family when they were all together — which happened to be a royal wedding.
In October of that year, Harry’s cousin, Princess Eugenie, was getting married to Jack Brooksbank, and that’s when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex decided to share their news.
In the book, Harry shared that he and Meghan were “deliriously happy" for Eugenie and Jack, and they had delayed the start of their first official royal tour as the Sussexes to be able to attend the wedding.
They also had full intentions to tell everyone the news that they were expanding their family.
In the book, Harry shared that his cousin’s wedding was a “chance to pull aside family members one by one and tell them our good news.”
So that’s what he did. "At Windsor, just before a drinks reception for the bride and groom, we cornered Pa in his study,” Harry explained of telling his dad, now King Charles, the news.
“He was sitting behind his big desk, which afforded his favorite view, straight down the Long Walk… He was delighted to learn that he was going to be a grandfather for a fourth time; his wide smile warmed me.”
Then Harry told William — and then Kate.
"After the drinks reception, in St. George's Hall, Meg and I pulled Willy aside. We were in a big room, suits of armor on the walls. Strange room, strange moment. We whispered the news, and Willy smiled and said we must tell Kate," Harry recalled.
"She was across the room, talking to Pippa. I said we could do it later, but he insisted. So we went and told Kate and she also gave a big smile and hearty congratulations. They both reacted exactly as I'd hoped — as I'd wished."
There were rumors at the time that Harry and Meghan had shared their baby news, and they were accused of upstaging the bride.
And with Harry confirming that rumor to be what happened, he is being criticized again over potentially upstaging his cousin.
Wedding etiquette notes that wedding guests aren’t supposed to do anything that may take away the attention from the bride or groom. This typically includes things such as proposing to someone else or announcing a big change like a pregnancy.
I’s not surprising some people came from the Sussexes when they admitted that’s when they told the royal family their news.
"To me personally, this is not your day, okay? To announce a pregnancy at someone else's wedding is that one of the shadier moves you're gonna do,” Sid Seixeiro, a TV host, said during a segment, according to Express.
"You're bigfooting the entire process for whoever's holding the wedding, you are telling everyone, 'look, we believe we are bigger than anything else going on here.'"
Of course, this doesn't mean that Eugenie or Jack were hurt by Harry and Meghan sharing their news, and these two couples have always seemed really close.
Eugenie recently announced she is expecting her second child with Jack.
