Consider your particular needs when buying a diaper bag. For example, if you're breastfeeding and need to carry your pump and bottles with you, choose a bag that stores the bottles upright to avoid leaks. Keep Dad in mind, too, notes Kellaghan. The Basics
Always carry enough diapers to last you through the day (the specific amount depends on the child) and a few extras for emergencies. You'll also want a changing pad, travel-size wipes and rash cream, a change of clothes for your child in case of an accident and several plastic bags for disposal.

If you have enough room in your diaper bag and you're going to be gone for a while, consider throwing in a few extras. Ideas include additional pacifiers, your child's favorite toy or comfort item, meals and snacks to get you both through the day, and a bib to avoid messes.
Things for You
Don't forget your own needs when packing the ultimate diaper bag. Add an extra shirt for yourself in case of an accident, and also pack water and your favorite snacks (that caloric pick-me-up may come in handy). Also include anything you'd carry with you in your purse: a wallet, identification, cash and a cell phone.
Packing for the Occasion
In some instances you'll want to pack a few special items in your diaper bag. For example, if you're spending time outdoors, drop in a tube of high SPF sunblock. If you foresee a nap for your baby in the afternoon, load up a book or other hobby to keep yourself entertained.
