It was always very hard for me to feel like I belong. There were no role models in the media that represented me as young, plus-size Latina.
Thankfully, Instagram has given people who would most likely never be seen in the media the opportunity to become role models for many.
There are thousands of Instagram accounts, but these are the best ones run by body-positive women that you need to follow now.
@preciousleexoxo: You have probably seen Precious Lee in many body-positive campaigns by Lane Bryant. The beautiful model never shies away from speaking her mind, and her strong stand on body diversity is inspiring. Keep an eye out for her; she might be the next Ashley Graham!
@SimoneMariposa: The model and blogger has made sure to represent for plus bodies that aren't as praised. Simone Mariposa went viral a few months ago for the hashtag #WeWearWhatWeWant to encourage plus-size women to wear what many have been told was not flattering.
@FlawsOfCouture: Canada has given us Drake, and now it's given us Sashagi Rudock. The plus-size blogger is a one of the best street-style queens on Instagram, hands down; I die for her athleisure style. The blogger is known for speaking her mind against body discrimination.
@SheIsDash: I don't think I would want to live in a world where Dascha Polanco doesn't exist. The Dominican actress from NYC constantly flaunts her curves and talks about her personal journey to self-confidence.
@TheRoxyReyes: The model was recently selected to be part of Khloe Kardashian's Good American squad. Reyes is always encouraging her followers to live fulfilling lives, no matter what others may think. She has spoken on many occasions about her experience with eating disorders and how she learned to accept her body at any size.
@FelicityHaywardCurveModel: You have probably seen the UK model on various brands. Hayward has even been featured in Vogue Japan. Don't be surprised to find her in the comments section, standing up to fat-shamers!
@TheEllyMaydayOfficialFanPage: The ovarian cancer survivor is one bad-ass model. Mayday will post unretouched photos of herself to remind her followers that our bodies are perfect no matter how many scars you have. Be ready for some BTS of her shoots and awesome pep talks.
@BodyPosiPanda: Megan Crabbe is a self-proclaimed "body-positive feminist ED warrior" from Instagram. Crabbe speaks up against society's unrealistic body goals. She post pictures of her body to remind people what an average woman looks like, flaws and all.
@AllisonKimmey: This body-positive mom is a true warrior. She shares pictures from the days when she feels great about her body, and even days when she doesn't. Kimmey gives a balanced view of what it's like to struggle every day with accepting your body.
Read more about her here.
@FluviaLaCerda: Lacerda is one of the first plus-size models to represent for the curve community. She graced Playboy Brazil with her gorgeous body, and is no stranger to showing off her curves in a teeny bikini.
@Harnaamkaur: If there is one person you must follow on Instagram, it's Harnaam Kaur. This woman has been a great example of self-love and acceptance. After the constant struggle of accepting her beard, Kaur is a reminder of how important it is to love yourself no matter what anyone says.
@RosieMercado: The Mexican-American model is your new Instagram life coach. Mercado shares everything from BTS of her shoots to motivational talks that will get you through the week. She often shares her active lifestyle to motivate those in search of a change of routine.
She recently coached me to go on 100 dates. Check it out here.
