Funny Joke or ‘Theft by Deception?’ Couple Faked Proposal To Score Free Drinks at Hawaii Resort

A California couple traveled to Hawaii for a nice vacation and got an entire restaurant to celebrate their engagement. Guests filmed the proposal and cheered for the couple. The unnamed restaurant in the Moana Surfrider Resort in Honolulu even gave the couple free drinks as a token of its congratulations. There is only one problem – they faked the whole thing. Jaela Bumpas and her husband, Joseph Vasquez, are already married. A video of their faux proposal went viral, and the internet has big thoughts.

Bumpas posted a video to X taken by another restaurant guest. The 18-second clip amassed more than 32 million views and thousands of comments.

One person thought Bumpas and her fiancé had committed a crime. “You steal from the restaurant you were at, you’re proud enough of doing so to post it on X, and 347,000 people liked the post. Sad commentary on a lot of levels,” the person commented.

Someone else agreed and hoped the restaurant identified Bumpas and Vasquez: “The bar that realizes who you are should arrest both of you for theft. It is called THEFT BY DECEIPTION. Life is tough is tough it is tougher when you are attention seeking r—-d.”

Bumpas claimed in the comments she didn’t realize anyone was filming. “Omg we thought the moment was over. & a sweet sweet lady let us know she recorded,” she wrote.

Many found the move disappointing, such as this person who commented, “People like this will ruin sweet gestures like this for all of the genuine people.”

But the comments aren’t all bad. Plenty of people thought Vasquez had a great idea. “lmaooo i love when people with the same sense of humor date,” another person wrote.

Someone else commented on the groom’s smooth moves, writing, “Your husband’s quick thinking turned a potential expense into a free night. It shows he can think on his feet. It speaks to a fun, playful dynamic in your relationship. It shows you both can enjoy a silly moment.”

Bumpas doesn’t seem upset by the attention. She clapped back in the comments, calling Vasquez her soulmate. “It wasn’t my idea but I can read his mind so I knew what was happening,” she wrote.
