I’m not sure what it is about wicker picnic baskets (maybe it’s growing up reading Anne of Green Gables over and over again??), but those nostalgic lunch-on-the-go containers will forever have my heart.
I love the idea of packing up special treats, thoughtfully planned lunch items, and perhaps some sweet drinks, and heading outdoors to enjoy nature and time together. I have fond memories of all the times I have packed picnics with my family and friends, because it takes a simple meal and elevates it to an experience.
Needless to say, picnics represent spending special time together, which is why I was so excited to come across this pretend picnic basket to introduce to my kids.
Plus, it’s just so darn adorable.
Fisher-Price Wooden Picnic Basket and Food Pretend Play Set

The wooden picnic basket and pretend food playset is from none other than Fisher-Price, and features non-toxic, water-based paints, granting you peace of mind during play. Plus, the wood is derived from well-managed, FSC-certified forests, adding to its environmentally friendly appeal.
Sustainability and safe features aside, though, let’s talk about the real draw of the pretend picnic basket: how downright cute this set and its accessories are. (Sorry, but it’s true.)
With a full 31 pieces, the set includes:
- A picnic basket
- Cozy gingham blanket (which doubles as a picnic basket cover and a seating blanket)
- Tray
- Beverage container
- 2 cups
- 2 plates
- 6 utensils
- 17 play food pieces including sandwich fixings, fruit, cheese, bread, dessert, and more

The adorable wooden baguette bread is even pre-sliced with Velcro patches in between, so your kids can “cut” it apart and reattach it to make the perfect sandwich or snack. (My kids love slicing their wooden fruit and food items, anyone else?)
And as a parent, I love how everything can be packed neatly away to be stored in the picnic basket when you’re done lunching on the lawn (or in the toy room, of course.) Small pieces and toys tend to go missing very quickly in my house, so I appreciate when toys come with built-in storage for ease of cleaning.
The picnic basket does contain some smaller-sized pieces, so it’s recommended for ages three and up.
Some shoppers who already own the picnic basket did note that the price tag is a bit higher than one might normally expect to spend for a toy, but explained that the quality, durability, and play value the basket provides make it worth it.
“Perfect gift to any kid,” said one shopper. “They all like to pretend serve and eat, especially outside, at the party with their picnic set. High quality, that’s why the high price. But worth every dollar spent. My 4yr old plays with her same age friends, but mostly with older kids! They love it too.”
“This is the CUTEST picnic basket!!” added another. “All the pieces are very nice, most being made from wood. The basket itself is very sturdy. Purchased for my granddaughter for Christmas and she’s played with it so much already. Highly recommend!!”
