In 1992, the musical trio TLC, asked a very important question: “What About Your Friends?” The singers hooked us with that catchy uptempo tune and the accompanying brightly colored video. But the question they were posing would come up again and again in many of our lives. Would the friends you’d chosen show up when you needed them the most?
If there is ever a time when you need a friend, it’s when you welcome a child into the world. Having a new tiny person to care for can be incredibly isolating for a lot of new moms and often leads to postpartum depression. Thankfully, one new mom did choose the right friends, and a recent viral video proves it.

A woman who goes by Amber Rose on TikTok shared a video of herself and a group of friends in the driveway of another friend. She and her friends are scream-singing a song from another iconic girl group: “Girl” by Destiny’s Child.
For those who are unfamiliar with it, the lyrics to the song are: “Girl, I can tell you been crying and needing somebody to talk to. … I’m your girl, you’re my girl, we your girls. Don’t you know that we love you?” In the caption of the video, Amber Rose wrote: “POV your friend home alone just had a baby not answering the phone.” She also included hashtags such as #realfriends and #notgoingnowhere.

Later, TikToker Unty Tan provided more backstory behind the original video, explaining just how much this new mom was suffering and highlighting the seriousness of postpartum depression.
She explained in her video that the mom peeked out the window, saw them and went back into the house, refusing to speak to them. Afterward, one of the friends stood on the trunk of the car and threw something at the bedroom window. The mom still didn’t come out.
Somehow, the woman’s friends were able to get into the house. They make their way to the bedroom, only to find the mom had locked herself in the bedroom with her baby.
The friends went down to the kitchen to find something to break the lock, Unty Tan added. They did, but before they had to use it, the mom came to the door with her baby in her arms and said, “Y’all are doing too much. Why are you here?”
Unty Tan said their response was, “We just want to know why you blocked us and we want to know if you’re OK.” Instead of answering the question, the mom locked herself in the closet. Her friends were concerned about her mental health so they checked it.
Unty Tan commended the young women for their response. “Instead of them saying ‘We’re going to write her off. We’re not going to talk to her. We don’t know what she’s going through. We ain’t got nothing to do with it,’ they got in the car and collectively drove to her house,” she shared in her video.
And their efforts paid off. Unty Tan shared that in the comment section of another video, the friends wrote that she is doing better.
But they also let it be known that their work wasn’t done. They wrote that if they have to show up at her house every day to make sure she cleans up, eats, and that her house is together, they will be there because they’re real friends.
Amber Rose shared that after the baby woke up because of their singing, the mother fed him and put him right back to sleep. Unty Tan said, “You are not her friends. You’re angels.”
The people of TikTok agreed. “They probably saved her life,” one user commented. “That’s what sisterhood is all about,” another person shared.
