Hailey Bieber Got Real About How She Manages Perioral Dermatitis

It's unrealistic, but we expect supermodels to have everything perfect. Perfect skin, perfect hair, perfect nails — they're seen as the pinnacle of great beauty. So it's appreciated when they're transparent about their struggles. That's why fans are singing Hailey Bieber's praises after revealing that she battles with a chronic skin condition

She shared her truth with Refinery29 and spoke about how clean beauty has played a major role in keeping her skin healthy.

Hailey Bieber has seemingly flawless skin.

However, in a recent and very personal interview with Refinery29, she proved fans wrong, revealing she's struggled with a chronic condition that leaves her skin extremely dry.

"My skin is ultimately really sensitive," she said. "I have used something new on set before and I go home and have a rash under my eyes. I have something called perioral dermatitis. I will wake up and have it really bad around my mouth and under my eyes. I never know what triggers it and sometimes I can't prevent it, but I try to use things that are as clean as possible. Even if I sleep on a pillowcase at a hotel, I will wake up and have it really bad!"

She takes lots of precautions.

When asked if she brings her own products, seeing as she's constantly in a glam chair, Bieber revealed that she doesn't unless she's having an intense breakout. However, she keeps an eye out for the products she knows will break out or irritate her skin further.

She revealed that her husband Justin Bieber's battle with Lyme disease caused her to make some beauty adjustments as well.

It urged her to lean further into clean beauty and pay attention to the ingredients in products. "It taught me to think about what we can do to replenish the skin from the torment it went through from being ill," she said. "If the insides are all inflamed and imbalanced, then the outside is going to be inflamed and imbalanced. I have seen it with my husband, and he's a guy, so that was new for me to learn how health affects a male's skin."

However, she says clean beauty isn't necessarily new to her.

She shared that her mother insisted on organic food and organic beauty products for her when she was growing up. That foundation, paired with her love for beauty, made her the perfect candidate to be an ambassador for makeup brand BareMinerals, which she says has had a positive effect on her skin. "My go-to is the BareMinerals Hydrating Foundation Stick. I am not big on face makeup every day, so I will tap it in the areas I need it, like under my eyes or on a blemish."
