The wedding is over and you’ve finally made it to the honeymoon. Time to relax, right? Not always. One couple thought they’d finally get some much-needed rest and relaxation on their private vacation — but little did they know that the bride’s entire family would be joining them — and not leave them alone.
Although it's been two years since the pair married and went on their honeymoon, the OP isn't over his new in-laws' surprise.
They'd just arrived for their honeymoon, and boy oh boy were they in for a rude awakening.
“My wife's family, parents, sisters and their spouses, ‘surprised us’ by showing up at our hotel and booking rooms on the same floor,” the Original Poster wrote in a since-deleted post on Reddit. “F—ing great.”
And it got worse from there.
“They showed up at our dinner table and I just said ‘all of you guys leave, now, get the f— out of here you're not joining us.” They were confused, so he "told them again and so they did.”
But they weren’t gone for long.
Again, they joined the OP and his wife while they were lying on the beach, and even though they ignored her family, her relatives continued to talk to them.
“After 5 minutes I yelled as loud as I could ‘get the f— away from us, it's our honeymoon, just for me and my wife, not you guys now respect the fact we want to be alone and f— off’" he recalled.
The OP’s MIL “breaks down crying” and the rest of the family called him a jerk.
His wife also wasn’t thrilled with what he said. Her family later tried to call and text him, trying to work things out — but he ignored them.
“Maybe they left early or took a hint cuz we didn't see them again,” he wrote. “This left a serious strain and we still are having issues today from it.”
Some people in the comments section didn't blame the OP for losing his cool.
“Who shows up uninvited to someone’s honeymoon! That’s just ridiculous. If you crash someone’s honeymoon you should expect to be spoken to like s— because it’s a s—y thing to do," explained one commenter.
"Yup, you were rude. But still [not the a–hole]. What were they thinking? Were they even thinking?" another commenter wondered.
"Mate, I'm going with [not the a–hole] for your reaction," a third commenter added. "The in-laws were appalling."
Other people thought he was too harsh.
One commenter thought everyone sucked. "[Y]ou could have much more politely asked them to leave you guys alone and pointed out that honeymoons are meant for the couple only, Not family," one commenter wrote. "It feels like you went from 0 to 100 super quick cussing them out, Out of the blue, Your wife has a right to be upset at how you reacted. Based on your post you seemingly didnt even try an alternative way of asking them to leave."
Another person agreed. "You don’t go to a honeymoon unannounced. I know couples who went with their best friends or families but that was planned like that. But you also don’t start insulting them the way you did. You went from 0 to 100, ignored them entirely after honeymoon and are now wondering why you have a strained relationship? You overreacted massively and show clear immaturity how you handled that."
A third person thought everyone sucked but the OP was being just a bit of a jerk. "You probably could have handled the exchange better. But who the f— shows up as a surprise on a honeymoon?!? Should have just started having sex right in front of them, honestly."
It's like the saying goes — two wrongs don't make a right. Hopefully the situation will ease up eventually.
