Kat Von D Defends Tattoo Liner After Fans Declare It’s A Packaging Scam

Kat Von D fans are threatening to "cancel" her and her cosmetics brand after discovering what they feel is something pretty sketchy about her eyeliner packaging.

Apparently, a few curious beauty lovers cracked open tubes of their Kat Von D Tattoo Eyeliner ($20, Sephora) and discovered that the cartridge is the same length as the one inside of the mini versions available at Sephora for $10 a piece. If the allegations were true, this would mean that the goth makeup queen has been charging shoppers twice the amount for the same amount they get in a mini.Ā

Sigh. You can always count on curious beauty fans to catch a minor detail that sparks a major controversy.

Unfortunately, Kat Von D had some serious defending to do after someone shook up the entire internet with these eyeliner scam allegations.

"Hello, no one buy Kat Von D make up eyeliner anymore. Smh," a fan shared on Twitter with a screenshot of a few images that have since gone viral. The allegations seem to have begun in private Facebook groups and within Reddit threads.Ā

"Yaā€™ll, Iā€™m about to lose my mind right now. Kat Von D really been putting a sample size eyeliner into a longer shell tube and selling to my dumb ass for triple the price. Iā€™m about to lose my mind right now," one user wrote underneath a photo of the Tattoo Eyeliner tube with the separated cartridge.

Yikes!

More and more Kat Von D Beauty fans started taking apart their favorite eyeliner, and the product cartridgesĀ are indeed much smaller than the actual liner tube.

"We saw online how the Kat Von D eyeliner isnā€™t the whole tube when opened up and we were definitely shocked by that being real. Whatā€™s up @KATVONDbeauty," another fan wrote directly to the beauty mogul.

One person even broke their eyeliner in a video for the entire internet to witness.

"Breaking my Kat Von D eyeliner to see the truth! Iā€™ve owned about 12 of these in my lifetime and Iā€™m really disappointed," a longtime customer shared.

Other former Kat Von D Beauty fans say the alleged cartridge scam isn't the only reason they no longer stan her Tattoo Eyeliner.

"Really tho @thekatvond @KATVONDbeautyĀ and I used to love this eyeliner but it seems like the formula changed and now it burns my eyes #sad," a fan wrote along with a screenshot of the original post about the liner drama.

Of course, fans of Kat Von D's friend turned enemyĀ Jeffree StarĀ used this fiasco as an opportunity to justify a preference for their fave.

"Just found out about the Kat Von D eyeliner BS today. This is exactly why I am so thankful for @JeffreeStar," a Twitter user wrote. "He would NEVER do this to us!! Thank you so much for being such a wonderful and loyal beauty guru, thatā€™s why I love and trust you so much!"

Lots of Jeffree Star fans sat waiting to read his response to the Kat Von D eyeliner accusations.

"I cannot wait for Jeffree Star to shade Kat Von D over this eyeliner situation," one user shared.

Some even think he sent out a little vague shade directed toward Kat Von D via Twitter.

"Jesus take the wheel," Star wrote online. For the record, that's not much evidence that this is directed toward Kat Von D. He could be talking about literally anything, so this one is a pretty long reach.

Jeffree Star may be the reigning king of beauty community drama, but he seems to be minding his business on this one.

In the midst of the drama between Kat Von D and her fans, Jeffree Star was busy giving away Louis Vuitton bags on his YouTube channel.

Despite the negative talk online, there are a few Kat Von D fans who think there is a reasonable explanation for the similar-sized eyeliner cartridges.

"The packages display different weights. The regular size eyeliner is 0.55 mL and the travel-size is 0.2 mL," one Reddit user shared.Ā

"They probably use some of the same pieces to save on production costs, but just fill the tubes with different amounts of liquid. The product would not be on the shelves if they were lying about how many mL of product you're paying for."

Kat Von D actually confirmed this supportive fan's theory in a post on her personal Instagram page.

"Before people start losing their minds over a recent post attacking our beloved Tattoo Liner, please read," she started her note.Ā

"The cartridges in bothĀ full-sizeĀ liners and mini liners are the same ā€” itā€™s the amount of product inside each cartridge that is different," the beauty mogul wrote. "So, for example, the product fill on our full-size Tattoo Liner is 0.55 ml, while the product fill for the mini is 0.2 ml – that's over DOUBLE the amount of product!"

Kat Von D also wants skeptics to understand that using the same size cartridge and just changing the amount of product inside is an industry-wide practice.

Maybe internet "experts" should do a little research about cosmetics development before throwing stones at an actual makeup mogul.

She even compared her eyeliner cartridges with another fan favorite for comparison.

For clarity, she posted a photo to her Instagram of the Kat Von D Tattoo Eyeliner beside a Stila Cosmetics eyeliner so fans can note the similarities. According to Kat Von D, the extra space is helpful for getting the product from the packaging to your eyes.

"Any brand who has an eyeliner with [a] similar component on the market will tell you the same thing. You need that much cartridge space for the pigment to flow out."

Fans flooded her comments section with support, with several people noting that realĀ Tattoo Eyeliner fanatics believed her all along.

"Anyone who has had Tattoo liner knows itā€™s the best and lasts a long time! Kudos to an amazing Vegan and Cruelty-free product too," a fan commented.

BTW, Kat Von D ended her PSA on a sweet yet shade-filled note.

"Hope this helps explain any confusion out there! Lotsa Love, [especially to all my haters]. #tattooliner #forever," she wrote in conclusion.

Translation: Move around! Nothing to see here but eyeliner that's meant to last and last.

Kat Von D's explanation and display of another brand's eyeliner packaging seems pretty solid. May the entire beauty community take this as a lesson on how not toĀ fall for fake news. There's nothing wrong with enjoying a good taste of tea every now and then, but we can't run with every photo and salacious post we read on the internet.
