Given the daily dosage of drama in the beautysphere, it's about time for a movie about it, right? Well, thanks to Netflix, Marlena Stell, and others like her, the next few weeks are about to have just that. That much-talked-about beauty documentary that Stell teased more than a year ago is less than three weeks away, and just about everyone is waiting in anticipation.
So what can we expect? Dirt on more influencers? Secrets of how our favorite products are made? We have no clue, but we're ready!
Last year, Makeup Geek founder Marlena Stell announced that she was working with Netflix on a documentary about the secrets and never-ending drama of the beauty influencer industry.
In a tweet posted in September of last year, Stell tweeted Netflix, thanking the studio for making her part of an upcoming documentary that she alluded would dive into the controversies that often surround beauty YouTubers. As expected, fans were excited to find out more.
But James Charles began ranting on Twitter, claiming his documentary idea was stolen and discrediting Stell's accolades.
"Hi, @netflix. Let’s make a documentary on the behind-the-scenes of the beauty industry and why the community is plummeting. I already have a full outline of it done that highlights faults on ALL SIDES in a NON-BIASED way, and a platform of millions that want to know more. Email me," he began a string of angry tweets targeted both at the streaming service and Stell.
Stell was quick to respond.
She insisted that her many years in the industry made her a more than qualified choice. "James you’re not even 21 years old, you’ve never produced makeup, you’ve never started a brand from the ground up. I’m sorry this feels like it was stolen but I did not seek out this opportunity. When you’ve been in this industry for 10+ years, then tell us about your 'experience,'" she said.
Well, after months of what seemed like radio silence, Stell has announced that the documentary will be here in just a few weeks.
"Just got confirmation today that the @netflix documentary will be out the day before Thanksgiving! Will find out more details next week but their team has worked so hard for many months on this project. Can't wait to see it," she announced on Twitter yesterday.
Of course she was inundated with comments and questions begging for more details, including the angle and name.
And as expected, she couldn't give anything away. "Once I get permission from Netflix, I can share title and more info," she responded to a curious fan.
And while the up-and-down world of beauty influencers creates the space for hundreds of different directions for the documentary to go in, we have a strong feeling that Charles will be discussed. The beauty world is quaking, and so are we.
