Mindy Kaling is momming hard this summer, and she’s doing it with the help of one beloved accessory: the claw clip.
I admit that there isn’t a lot I feel I have in common with Mindy: I’m not downright hilarious, I’m not a successful producer and actress, and I certainly don’t have a fabulous wardrobe or access to glamorous movie premieres.
But as it would turn out, Mindy Kaling and I do share one common passion, and that is our collective decision to completely give up on any and all attempts to do our hair this summer, instead favoring throwing it up 24/7 in the humble claw clip.
In an Instagram post, Mindy spoofed the popular “You look happier” social media trend by using it to explain how she “stopped” doing her hair, a step that led her to find more happiness in her life.
She even added the all-caps caption “I AM FREE” to demonstrate just how empowered she has become by embracing the eternal claw clip style.
Over 45,000 people agreed with Mindy’s post, adding comments in support of both the actress and her decision to ditch the hair styling attempts.
“Same, girl, literally same,” agreed one commenter on Instagram.
“Claw clips are life – they always look polished but are secretly more lazy than a ponytail,” pointed out one commenter.
“I’m almost 40 and my claw clip collection is growing and growing,” observed another.
Another Instagram commenter claimed that a flat claw clip exists, which “don’t hurt your head on a headrest in the car or when lying on a beach,” so as an avid claw clip user, I had to do some digging to find out if it was true.
I was able to find some cute lay-flat claw clip options, which I had no idea existed. Someone should tell Mindy!

This lay-flat claw clip option from Walmart is oversized and can be used in straight or curly hair. Because of their bigger size, if you have thin or fine hair, you could definitely get away with just one clip.
Those with thicker, textured, or really long hair might need to add an extra clip or two for reinforcement.

I also found this flat claw clip style, a design that’s supposed to cut down on any discomfort in the back of the head. The design is still raised, however, but fits more neatly across the head than a traditional claw clip.

I’m also highly intrigued by this Walmart claw clip option, because it looks incredibly sturdy and has a much more intuitive, lay-flat design, because it curves against the back of your head with a natural fit.
It also looks like it can hold a lot of hair, so it would be great for most styles and hair types. Plus, they’re on sale, so you can try out two clips for only $6.
“These are the best claw clips,” gushed one Walmart shopper. “They are so comfortable to wear don’t pull or tug on long thick hair and look so cute! You can also lay down on it, wear it in a car, workout in it! I recommend.”

And of course, if you’re in the market for some new traditional claw clips, my teen daughters and I own this eight-pack. The pack comes with four traditional claw clips and four straight clips. Both options work well, although I tend to favor the more traditional look more often.
My hair is very fine and thin, and I have no problem with all-day wear with my claw clips. My daughters have thicker hair, and they’re also able to rock them equally, so these clips are ideal for most hair types.
Like Mindy’s, my claw clip is the unofficial anthem of my summer as a mom, and you know what? I think she’s right — I am happier because of it.
