Mom Who Voted for Donald Trump Says Son Hasn’t Spoken to Her Since the Election

Some families believe that politics should be discussed outside of family events and maybe even only with certain immediate relatives. During the 2024 election, however, that seemed to change, as staunch Republicans and dedicated Democrats and Progressives made their voices heard. So much so that they were unafraid about what those conversations might mean for their relationships with family and friends.

One mom shared on X (formerly Twitter) that her relationship with her son drastically changed after she voted for Donald Trump and her son, a liberal, voted for someone else, presumably Kamala Harris. She shared that her son, who is 36 years old, has refused to speak to her or her husband following the election.

She said she misses her son despite their different political views.

The woman, whose name is Shannon Hill, posted on X that she sent her son a birthday gift and even called and left a voicemail, but she doesn’t expect to hear back from him. This is because of their vastly different political and social views. Although Shannon thinks they should put that aside for family, according to her tweet, her son feels differently.

“I miss him and hope that someday he will come around and realize the damage he is doing to our family by acting this way,” Hill wrote in her post. “My breaking heart is a continual reminder. I know many of you have similar stories and I pray that your family members come around as well. I’m not asking him to change his politics, but you can’t let it come between family.”

Other Trump-supporting parents shared that their adult kids cut them off too.

After Hill posted the tweet on X, other parents of adult kids who voted differently left comments to share their experiences. Many of them wrote that they, too, hoped their kids could set aside politics and those kinds of beliefs to repair relationships. But, according to some of them, their adult children are unwilling to let up after the election.

One woman responded to the tweet with, “My husband and I were disowned by our 33 year old son on January 21st. Haven’t heard from him since then. My birthday and Mother’s Day nothing. Our lives go on.”

A dad shared that his adult daughter “got indoctrinated in college” and that she hasn’t spoken to him in eight years. It’s unclear what he meant by the indoctrination comment, but given his support for Hill’s politics, it would appear his daughter’s political beliefs are more left-leaning than his.

A mom replied to Hill’s tweet to share that she believes Hill’s son will regret cutting her out of his life if he doesn’t make amends with her.

“If he’s 36, he’s old enough to know better, and if he doesn’t reconcile with you and anything happens to you, he’s going to have to live with it,” she wrote. “I’m so sorry. I’m going to pray you hear from him soon.”
