Well, folks, another beauty YouTuber has been caught being problematic. This time it's Nikita Dragun, who's currently in Milan preparing to walk at Fashion Week. She just posted a questionable video to her stories, and it has people accusing her of blackface. While Dragun has yet to respond, Twitter surely has a lot to say, and critics aren't letting up.
See the drama ahead.
Just when it seemed like YouTubers might have been keeping the problematic activity to a minimum, Nikita Dragun is here to say, "Hold my beer."
She posted to her stories wearing a durag and appeared to be donning a skin tone much darker than the one that we're used to seeing. The YouTuber, who just touched down in Milan to model at Fashion Week is now being flamed on Twitter. "Sow ms nikita dragun…. what is dis hunny," someone asked about the video.
For reference, this is her actual skin tone.
It doesn't take a genius to know that Dragun is certainly not naturally as dark as she appeared on the story. "This is how she actually looks btw…," one tweet read, displaying Dragun on an average day.
This isn't the first time she's come under fire for cultural insensitivity.
There was that one time that she wore box braids, angering many. "The excessive tanning….The durag….Wearing a braided wig…. And so MANY other countless things she’s done, but yet REFUSES to address. This is why I can’t stand @NikitaDragun (aka thenikkawannabe)," someone tweeted about Dragun.
And while it appears to be a filter, people are upset regardless.
And considering she was also wearing the durag, it all looks like she was attempting to create a caricature of people of color. "I’m sorry but ABSOLUTELY NOT," another critic tweeted. "This filter is not appropriate and very much so resembles blackface and the durag is EXTREMELY INAPPROPRIATE! I was a fan but I have to unstan."
Can we put a stop to this already?
It's 2020, so most people know what's acceptable and what's not. Let's end the foolishness already. "Can non-black beauty influencers stop depending on black culture and outrage for clout?" someone asked. "Go back to fighting each other for relevance or something, ANYTHING but this shit."
