Let's be real: When it comes to beauty, none of us get it right every single time. Every once in a while, we fall victim to the latest trend, assuming that it looks good and then looking back and thinking, What the hell was I doing? It's OK, we've all been there, and so have some of our favorite celebrities. But as another decade comes to a close, what better way to commemorate the 2010s than with a list of the beauty trends that weren't our most shining moments?
Ahead, check out the beauty faux pas we committed this decade that will have you taking a serious trip down memory lane.
Too-Orange Tan
Who could ever forget Jersey Shore? The MTV reality television hit, which first aired in December 2009, introduced us to a group of Italian strangers with some serious tans. The fan-favorite, Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi, had a larger-than-life personality and a spray tan to match. And while the tan brighter than the sun was definitely on trend early in the decade, we realize now that it was never OK.
But have no fear, Polizzi is looking amazingly bronzed these days.
Squiggle Brows
Boy oh boy, we're happy that's over. The short-lived trend meant that squiggled eyebrows took over social media feeds. And while many (like us) hoped it was nothing more than a sick joke, some took it seriously, wearing the trend like a badge of honor.
Black-Out Eyeliner
We all had that goth queen phase, where we went a bit overboard with eyeliner and just kept layering it on until there was no lid or under-eye space left. However, these days, we're realizing the style may have been a little over-the-top and are opting for a more understated eye.
Powder Flashback
Baking is a necessary part of a red-carpet-worthy look, but so is making sure that all of the excess is properly dusted away. More times than we can count, celebs have hit the carpet with their skin revealing exactly where the powder has been applied. Let's just say, things seem to be getting better these days.
DIY Bangs
Make no mistake, while Beyoncé may have missed the mark with these majorly talked-about bangs, this was the only time she was caught slipping the entire decade. However, she's not the only one who made this beauty faux-pas this decade. Maybe it was the abundance of Instagram how-tos or just the false notion that bangs aren't that hard to do, but we're going to leave cutting our own bangs in the past. Let's call in the professionals.
Two-Toned Hair and Unblended Extensions
Unblended hair has had its time far longer than it deserved, and now it's time to lay it to rest. We saw far too many extensions that were clearly two different lengths, and far too many used the extensions as a reason for multiple colors, again with no blending. Say it with us, folks: "Layers and a good colorist."
Bodily Nails
The quippy trend that started off funny ended kinda creepy. From nails with menstrual cycles to nails that gave birth, hands were clearly the place to celebrate bodily functions. And while yes, it's all completely natural, in the form of acrylics, it was just plain strange.
Overdrawn Lips
Everyone wanted fuller lips this decade — the irony of it all — and that included Kylie Jenner. And before her fillers were as prominent as they are now, she drastically overlined them, starting a trend that still won't seem to let up. Let's keep it to a minimum in the '20s.
Thinly Tattooed Brows
We've never been more thankful to microblading for turning the thin eyebrow trend on its head. Now more than ever, full, thick, and undone brows are ruling beauty, and we're super grateful.
Glitter Roots
While we're sure the goal of glitter roots is to add some flair and conceal growing out a color, what it looks like is just reflective chunks of dandruff. Ew. And we're not saying to completely rid of hair glitter completely, but moving the placement further down the hair shaft is a serious must.
So there you have it, folks. The 2010s brought us quite the beauty roller coaster, but we're expecting a much brighter decade ahead. Happy New Year!
