Back-to-School Event Erupts in Chaos After Mom Opens Fire To Break Up Fight Her Son Was In

A North Carolina mom is facing charges after opening fire during a back-to-school event at her son’s school. Cherez Davis thought she was defending her son after he allegedly got into an argument with a fellow student. But in reality, she terrified a large crowd of people. After she nonchalantly fired her gun, people began to fear for their lives. Thankfully, no one was hurt during the incident or its aftermath.

On August 9, 2025, Davis, 34, took her son to the Back-to-School Health Fair at the C.W. Williams Community Health Center in Charlotte, People reported. According to an affidavit obtained by the magazine, Davis told police her son got into an argument with another boy.

Another adult allegedly “got involved,” escalating the altercation, she claimed. Davis said she then reached into her backpack and took out a Taurus G6 handgun. The woman then “fired two shots into the air to try to break up the fight,” the affidavit states.

Upon hearing the shots, the more than 100 children and adults at the gathering began to panic. They scattered, causing chaos to take over, police said. Luckily, no injuries were reported.

According to the affidavit, as the crowd descended into chaos, Davis “put her firearm back into the backpack and started walking away,” People reported. She was soon arrested after police arrived and searched the crowd for someone who matched the shooter’s description.

WBTV reported on the incident, sharing a statement from the health center.

“That one moment when a woman fired 3 shots in the air was an isolated incident that occurred toward the end of the event,” the statement reads in part. “We are saddened that our community, vendors and team members experienced this, but are so thankful that no one was harmed! C. W. Williams Community Health Center looks forward to your continued partnership and support.

“Let’s not allow this to detract or distract us from what was accomplished by the tireless work of our team developing and successfully executing the best Back to School Health Fair ever for families and children of our community!” the statement added. “It is the many hours before this incident and the joy experienced by all that shall be remembered.”

Davis is being charged with carrying a concealed weapon and going armed to the terror of people, per People. She was released on a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court in December.
