Cannibalism is something that feels unreal. How could a person go through the process of killing and eating another person? What would make them so desperate that they would even consider it? Usually cannibalism is something that only happens in extreme circumstances like when people are on the brink of death and have no other choice. On the other hand, cannibalism is also associated with truly depraved people, such as serial killers. The story of Dmitry Luchin, a Russian man who has been called out as a modern cannibal after he killed his girlfriend, has recently resurfaced, and it is truly horrific.
Luchin first made shockwaves in 2018 when he was 23 years old, the Daily Express US reported. He invited his 45-year-old girlfriend, Olga Budunova, to have dinner at his home for International Women’s Day. But it appeared that he had much darker plans in mind.
After sharing some wine, Luchin began to beat his girlfriend with the bottle repeatedly, ultimately killing her. Next, he methodically chopped up her body with a meat cleaver. But then he did something that made even the most seasoned investigators feel sick to their stomachs.
According to investigators, Luchin cooked parts of Budunova’s brain, calmly eating it when he was finished. He reportedly washed it down with a glass of blood he collected from her corpse, the Daily Express reported.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, he removed the woman’s stomach from her body. Luchin also cut off both of her ears, placing one inside her mouth and the other in the family cat’s bowl. Using her blood and purple nail polish, he wrote abusive messages all over her body. He also used her blood to paint demonic imagery on the door in an attempt to summon Satan.
Investigators believed that Luchin was a satanic follower who also practiced the occult, per the Daily Express. Despite his alleged affiliations, he told police he ate the cooked brains twice because he “liked the taste.”

During his trial, prosecutors said Luchin was “obsessed” with serial killers. He spent hours on websites dedicated to them, the Irish Mirror reported.
Sitting inside a metal cage while in court, Luchin began reciting a weird poem while insisting he was “no maniac, murderer or cannibal” but instead a “student, sportsman and poet.”
Judge Alexey Stanovsky silenced him when he began going on a rant about Soviet serial killer Andrei Chikatilo. After a psychiatric evaluation, Luchin was found mentally competent and found guilty of murder with “special cruelty.” He will spend 19 years in a strict-regime penal colony, the Daily Express reported.
After Budunova’s death, her neighbors spoke out about the horrors of her murder. Many said they will never forget what they saw that day. “It was like something from another world. No human could do what he did,” one person shared.
