A time that was supposed to be a celebration has ended in tragedy. A mom in Madrid, Spain, died after she committed suicide by jumping out of her apartment window. The single mother took her twin sons out the window with her. It was especially shocking because they had just been celebrating the boys’ birthday less than a day before the incident. An investigation into what led the woman to such an extreme act is underway, but those who knew her say that she was likely suffering from depression. Even though the mom died, her sons survived the fall, but there’s no way of knowing yet if they will survive their injuries.
Around 9 a.m. on December 6, 2025, the 48-year-old mother, only identified as Maria, fell out of the 10th floor window, the U.S. Sun reported. The woman died instantly on impact. Her 3-year-old twin sons, who she was holding when she fell, were transported to different hospitals.
One boy was taken to Madrid’s 12 de October University Hospital, while the other was brought to Hospital Infantil Nino Jesus. Both boys have been listed in critical condition. Medical professionals fear that one of the boys will not survive because he received the worst injuries.
According to reports, shortly before going out the window, Maria purchased birthday gifts for the boys.

Moments before the mom jumped out of the window, she shouted out her plans, Telemadrid reported, per Metro UK. This gave her neighbors time to call for help but not time enough to stop her.
“She must have been in a very bad way,” one local said.
Neighbors told the news outlet that Maria had depression and was taking medication to treat it. She was raising her boys alone after splitting from her husband.
“She barely spoke and wouldn’t even say hello when you passed her,” a neighbor told Telemadrid.
“We can confirm the death of a woman who plunged from the tenth floor of a block of flats in Ricardo Ortiz. Two children aged three have been taken to different hospitals,” a spokesperson for the city’s ambulance service said, per Telemadrid, Metro UK reported. “National police are conducting an ongoing investigation. Local police and firefighters were also mobilised.”
