A fire at a home in Orange County, Florida, killed a 9-month-old baby and left the baby’s mom and sister both injured. After a thorough investigation, the mom has been charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
The fire that led to a 9-month-old baby’s death occurred at about 6:30 p.m. on August 26. The mom, 26, was at home with her two children at the time, reported the Miami Herald. After deputies responded, the mom and her kids were taken to the hospital with “serious injuries,” per WKMG.

The child who survived was quickly released from the hospital.
The hospital released the surviving child a short time later. The mom is still in the hospital as of November 5, reported WFTV. Authorities have not said what caused the fire.

The mom has been charged.
After looking into the fire, investigators determined that the mom started the fire on purpose, the sheriff’s office said on November 5, per WKMG.
“The woman involved in this incident… intentionally caused the fire, which killed one of her children,” a news release from the sheriff’s office read. Though she remains in the hospital, the mom has been charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.
Her pre-trial hearing has been scheduled.
Authorities have not shared many details about the fire with the public. At this time, investigators have not shared the mom’s motive. The mother has not been named publicly in order to protect the identities of her children.
