A Massachusetts mom has been discovered stealing money from her daughter. The woman, Nancy Taylor, had been intentionally defrauding the federal government, claiming benefits for her daughter and using them for herself. She lied for years, collecting checks even though she knew the money wasn’t going to its intended person.
It took years before she was found out. Eventually she pleaded guilty, knowing that going to prison was a possibility. And now, she’s going to have to pay back all the money she stole.
According to charging documents, Nancy Taylor applied to receive Social Security benefits on behalf of her daughter in August 2014, WWLP reported. At the time, the Social Security Administration told her that if her daughter left her custody, she was required to inform them.
In May 2016, Taylor lost custody of her daughter. She never notified the SSA about the change. Five years later, in 2021, she called the SSA to update contact information to continue receiving benefits. Taylor had never once let the Social Security Administration know about any changes in her home.
Taylor provided two fake forms showing that her daughter still lived with her in June 2022. She went into a field office with the intention of reactivating her daughter’s benefits. The mom even said that she was using the money she got from SSA to take care of her daughter. Of course, she knew that wasn’t true.
In reality, Taylor was using the money she stole from her daughter to pay her own bills.
Between May 2016 and May 2022, Nancy Taylor embezzled $86,994 that was intended for her daughter. The girl, who is a minor, has not been named. Taylor was indicted in April 2024; she pleaded guilty to one count of theft of government money in February 2025.
On May 12, 2025, Taylor was sentenced to 10 months in prison. She will then have three years of supervised release. Additionally, she will have to pay $86,994 in restitution.
