Stranger Told Man ‘I Believe Your Wife Wants You Dead’ Before He Was Found Shot to Death in Park

A woman who allegedly attempted to pay someone to kill her husband is now facing charges herself. Police believe that Susen Hunter may have offered two different men a lot of money to kill her husband. But now, they’re saying that the woman may have done the killing herself instead.

Authorities also suspect that one of the men approached for the killing might have tipped off Hunter’s husband. Unfortunately, knowing that his wife wanted him dead didn’t save him. He was found dead only days after the tip.

Susen Adell Hunter, 58, from Lawton, Oklahoma, faces charges of first-degree murder, solicitation for first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, and obstruction of justice, KSWO reported. Authorities believe she shot and killed her husband, John Velas.

On the morning of September 4, 2023, Velas was found dead near the walking track of Elmer Thomas Park in Lawton. According to the Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s autopsy report, Velas had been shot three times in the head. Another bullet grazed his torso, ending up in his leg, and another shot grazed his thumb.

Investigators said Hunter admitted to owning one of the two guns used to kill Velas. However, they only found one when searching her room.

And that’s not all. Authorities say that Hunter offered a large amount of money to two different men to kill Velas. She even allegedly offered one of the men a house to live in. Tavell Williams allegedly made contact with Velas to warn him about his wife’s plans.

“Our victim did indicate that someone tried to approach him, saying, ‘Hey, I believe your wife wants you dead,'” Lawton Police Sgt. Chris Blessing said, KWTV reported. That was only days before Velas was killed.

KSWO reported that police said Williams was living with Hunter in November 2024. According to investigators, the conversation took place in the home she offered the other man. However, when they went to serve an arrest warrant for an unrelated charge, Hunter denied ever knowing him. Currently, Hunter is held on a $1 million bond.
