2-Year-Old Dies After Getting Hold of Unsecured Gun & Shooting Himself While Mom Slept

Leaving a gun unattended can have fatal consequences. There have been so many stories of children — especially young children — getting hold of a gun when they shouldn’t have. They don’t know how guns work, and then they end up setting it off. Sometimes, they may accidentally shoot someone, but other times, they end up dead themselves. Suddenly, people are left to mourn a senseless tragedy. Recently, a toddler in Alabama found a gun while his mom slept. He shot himself and died.

The Valley Police Department was called to a home in Valley, Alabama, on Sunday, May 25, 2025, around 2 a.m., AL.com reported. Valley Police Chief Mike Reynolds shared the information in a news release. When police arrived at the home, they found a 2-year-old boy with a gunshot wound.

He was flown to Piedmont Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, WTVM reported.

After a preliminary investigation, police believe that the boy accidentally shot himself. He found an unsecured handgun in the home, but police don’t know much about the gun. According to the police, the boy’s mother was asleep when this happened. There was also another child in the home. An age wasn’t given for the other child.

Currently, no charges have been filed. The case is still under investigation. Police are asking that anyone with information call Sgt. William Burgos at 334-756-5203.
