A woman in India has been accused of killing her young niece. The cruel woman, who has only been identified as Poonam, seemingly committed the killing in a fit of jealous rage. It is certainly strange to hear that a grown woman is jealous of a child, especially being so jealous that she would kill the girl. And her reason? She believed that the child was too pretty. Imagine killing a little girl because of your own insecurity. The girl’s family is now forced to mourn the child who was taken way too young because someone else was unhappy with themselves. And there is evidence the woman may have done this before.
The woman was arrested in Panipat, police said on December 3, 2025, according to the Hindustan Times. Following a court appearance, she was taken into police custody. She is accused of killing her 6-year-old niece during a family wedding celebration.
According to a complaint registered by the dead girl’s grandfather, the wedding celebration took place from November 30 to December 1. Family members came from all over to celebrate, including Poonam, Superintendent of Police Bhupender Singh shared with the outlet.
Investigators said the killing happened on December 1 while the guests were out of the house. The little girl was climbing the stairs.
Poonam allegedly followed the girl to the terrace and spoke to her. “After having her placed in a plastic tub filled with water outside the storeroom, she drowned the child in the tub, then bolted the door from the outside, and came down,” investigators said.

News.com.au reported that the girl, whose name was Vidhi, attended the wedding with her parents, 10-month-old brother, and grandmother. Her father allegedly received a phone call during the celebration telling him the girl was missing. A family search party was formed immediately.
After an hour, Vidhi’s grandmother made a tragic discovery. She found the girl in the storeroom, her head submerged in water. The girl was rushed to NC Medical College, where she was declared dead.
Following her arrest, Poonam confessed to police that she had killed the girl. She told them “she didn’t want anyone to look more beautiful” than her at the wedding.
“During interrogation, the accused woman told the police that she was irritated by beautiful girls,” Singh said.
That’s not all she told them. During the interrogation, the woman admitted to killing another girl in August that she believed was “prettier” than her.
The woman also told police that in January 2023, she had drowned her 3-year-old son and her sister-in-law’s daughter, 9, in a water tank in her village, the Times reported. Singh added that Poonam admitted she had killed her son to avoid suspicion in the 9-year-old’s death.
The family believed the killing to be “accidental,” but police said she “committed these crimes one after the other.”
