I Offered My Sister $500 Not To Use the Baby Name I’ve Always Dreamed Of & It Sparked Some Drama

What’s in a name? For some people, a lot. A baby name carries a lot of meaning for people and many parents spend a long time searching for the perfect name for their future child. And when they find it, they don’t want to let it go. Baby names can also be a point of contention for people, causing drama within families. They may have awful fights over names, especially siblings. One woman on Reddit has always dreamed of a certain name for her first child — and now she has gone to extreme measures to use it.

The woman’s sister is about eight months pregnant with her first child.

She posed her baby name dilemma in Reddit’s AITA forum. She explained that she is 30 years old and fears she may not be able to have children due to fertility issues. While talking with her younger sister, she learned she planned to name her daughter “Isla.”

“I have always said if I ever have a daughter, her name will be Isla. I have been saying this since I was a teenager,” the woman wrote. “Everyone in our family knows this.” She then went on to tell her sister that she wasn’t allowed to use Isla because it was her “dream name forever.”

“I explained that if she uses it, she will ruin my future experience if I ever get pregnant.”

Their feud over the baby name is causing drama within the family.

At first, the younger sister didn’t believe her big sis was serious. But then she realized that she was. “You might never have kids. I am literally about to give birth,” the younger woman said. She is refusing to change her mind about the name, which is causing friction for the whole family.

The women’s parents believe that the pregnant one should get to keep the name. However, some extended family members believe the OP has already called dibs and deserves first right to the name.

Things have escalated in a truly extreme way that no one could have anticipated.

“I even offered to pay her $500 to pick something else,” the original poster confessed. Her sister then said she was being “controlling and weird.” To make matters worse, the OP also posted about the situation on Facebook. “Now I am getting hate from strangers calling me unhinged,” the woman said, adding she feels “heartbroken” by the whole thing.

In an update, she shared that her sister posted screenshots of their conversation on social media, calling her “toxic.” However, OP confronted her sister, telling her that she won’t be present for her baby shower and birth if she uses the name Isla.

And then she shared that she still plans to use the name in the future. To that, her sister called her “psychotic,” but she’s standing her ground.

Commenters are overwhelmingly calling her the villain in the story, pointing out that the OP doesn’t ‘own’ the name Isla.

“Don’t be weird,” one person began. “When you get pregnant, find a new, wonderful name you can use. Would I do what your sister did? No. It’s hurtful. But you’re making yourself look bad by throwing a fit about this. Let it go and focus on your own life. When you eventually get pregnant, you’ll have a wonderful experience regardless.”

“This is unhinged,” someone else wrote. “This is a real baby about to be born. You can’t claim a name for a baby that may never happen. You’re being unreasonable.”

However, one person was on the OP’s side in the argument: “It is okay to be miffed about it. But truly, you could still name your child Isla also. If your sister got upset about it, you have the history of wanting the name since you were a teenager. If your sister was being kind and considerate, she would know that that’s a sensitive thing when you have fertility issues.”
