Kelly Monaco Accuses ‘General Hospital’ of ‘Dismantling’ Her Character in Since-Deleted Comment

One month after the news broke that Kelly Monaco would not be returning to General Hospital after 21 years starring on the soap opera, she’s speaking out — kind of. She shared a comment on Instagram that appeared to claim that her leaving the series was an act of “retaliation,” hinting there was some drama involving her character’s storyline happening behind the scenes, but she quickly deleted her statement. What’s actually going on?

The exchange took place on Soap Hub's Instagram account.

According to People, Kelly responded to a comment on a post about the actress’ departure that read, “What do you got concrete in your head she wasn’t fired she didn’t take the pay cut so she had to leave.”

Kelly replied, writing, “‘No primary role’.. do your homework. When Billy Miller was fired, Sam’s storyline stopped. Stripping Sam of every characteristic she had.”

She went on to accuse the show of 'dismantling' her character.

“Something I worked for decades to build … Slowly dismantling her, into a character that I did not recognize, let alone the audience,” she wrote. “Call it what you will … retaliation at it[s] finest. I will give a proper statement. The truth will set you free.”

Kelly deleted the comment shortly afterward.

Kelly's departure from the show was confirmed at the end of August.

At the time, Soap Opera Network was the first to report that Kelly would not be returning after filming more than 2,000 episodes as Sam McCall. The news outlet claimed Kelly was “blindsided” by the network’s decision to kill off her character, who will be shown on the series for the final time this fall.

Kelly has already filmed her final episode of the show.

In a message that Kelly’s mom, Carmina Monaco, shared on X (formerly Twitter) last week, she revealed that her daughter’s last day of filming had been September 27.

“This moment is a difficult one, but knowing that she has had such an incredible, devoted fan base has given her strength,” Carmina wrote. “You’ve stood by her through every twist and turn, celebrating her achievements and providing comfort in the hard times. Your love and dedication have meant more than words can express, not only to Kelly but to all of us who care so deeply for her.”

Her most recent Instagram post was in July, when she was visiting with friend and former General Hospital costar Anthony Geary in Amsterdam.

After seeing Kelly’s comment, though, it seems that when she’s ready she’ll have a lot to say about leaving the series.
