Viral Video Shows What It’s Really Like to be a Mom on Vacation

One mom on TikTok shared a comical and all-too-accurate skit showing what moms are like on vacation, and we can so relate. Madison Humphrey received over 5 million views and thousands of comments on her video about going on a family vacation, with many fellow TikTokers admitting that they are “that mom” or that they have a mom who acted similarly while on vacation. Humphrey has over 1 million followers and shares tons of comical vids, not all of which are mom skits, but her mom impressions are spot on.

As many mothers can attest, going on a vacation with kids means early morning wake-ups, all the coffee, trying to find sunscreen, and often asking “Where did your dad go?” A vacation with kids is really just parenting in another location, but whether you are the “mom on vacation” or fondly remember your own childhood vacations, you'll totally get Humphrey’s video.

‘That one mom on vacation at 6 a.m.,' her video begins.

The text overlay on Humphreys' video reads, "That one mom on vacation at 6 a.m." Humphrey is seen wearing a classic mom favorite — an oversized comfy cardigan — and she opens the light-blocking curtains and says, “Everybody get up. It’s time to start the day!”

A voice in the background asks, “Mom, what are you doing?” to which she yells back, “I’m making coffee!” Then she’s drinking her coffee on the balcony, commenting on all the people at the beach. She makes several remarks such as, “Look at all those nice people out there,” and “That’s an interesting swimsuit” with a judgmental eye roll.

She also waves to the neighbors and comments on a beachgoer’s tote bag because every mom needs a good tote bag.

‘Where's your father?’ she says at the end, and all the moms could relate.

Then Humphrey’s skit goes back inside the hotel, where she asks, “Were ya'll freezing last night? I was freezing.” Next, she’s ordering breakfast on the phone and says, “What does everyone want for breakfast? I’m ordering room service.” And in true mom fashion she adds, “If you don’t tell me now, you’re not getting breakfast.”

Toward the end of her video she says, “We’re leaving!” and grabs a tote bag and starts rushing around the hotel. She shouts out, “Who needs sunscreen?” and “Where’s your father?!”

TikTok users could relate to that last question, and many commented on how common that is for them.

One user wrote, “‘where’s your father’ is so real he’s always at the cvs down the road, or the hotel gym.”

Another person commented, “where’s your father is the most common thing I say nowadays .”

“‘Where’s your father’ THE MOST ACCURATE QUOTE MY MOM MAKES,” wrote another TikToker.

It’s so funny it hurts, but moms are like this because they carry the majority of the load for things like family vacations.

Humphrey’s video is so relatable and funny because it’s mostly a real depiction of what many mothers on vacation experience. Research and studies have long shown that mothers typically carry more of the cognitive labor or invisible labor when it comes to planning for activities. A mom is probably the one who researched and booked the trip and packed a bag for everybody, including the snacks.

Allison Daminger, a doctoral candidate in sociology and social policy at Harvard University, identified four different stages of mental work related to the responsibilities of a family household, per BBC.

Daminger listed them as anticipating needs, identifying options, deciding on an option, and monitoring the results, the news outlet reported. Daminger also found that mothers did more of the anticipation, planning, and research, even when parents made decisions together.

The travel site Tripping noted that 60% of moms would go on vacation with close friends and their children to have help with babysitting and 78% of moms would invite parents to have help on vacation. Bottom line: Even "vacation mom" needs help and partners need to step up.

TikTok users could not get enough of her mom skit video.

As evidenced by the 5 million views and thousands of comments, TikTokers went crazy for Humphrey's vacation mom skit. Many admitted either that this was them or that their mom did the exact same thing.

“My mom is like that lol,” one person commented.

“Yep. My mother. Love ya mom but…it wasn’t always easy,” someone else shared.

“I’m literally this person,” another person wrote.

Still others pointed out that moms are like this because vacations are stressful.

“Why is vacation so stressful ,” one person wrote.

“And then she’s getting stressed because she’s doing all the work and not getting time off,” another TikToker commented.
