As a mom, I spend a lot of time trying to navigate the fine line between giving my kid bodily autonomy and worrying about what people will say. We want to let our kids feel good in their skin, but is there a point where you’re going too far? Some people say yes. One mom on TikTok went viral after putting a full lace-front wig on her young daughter for the first day of school.
Although many people praised the mom for making her daughter feel great, others admonished her because of her daughter’s age. But do other people’s opinions actually matter?
TikTok user Krystal La’Shon shared the video with her million-plus followers. In the video, she explained that the hairstylist who was supposed to be doing her daughter Novah’s hair canceled. Novah was getting ready to start kindergarten, so both mother and daughter wanted to make sure she looked and felt her best.
For the little girl, looking her best included wearing her mom’s “good” wig. Even though the mom was frustrated that the appointment was canceled at the last minute, she wasn’t about to ruin her baby girl’s first day. So she sat the little one down in the chair and got to work.
Considering she’s only in kindergarten, Novah did well while sitting still while she got her hair done, going so far as to help her “wig influencer” mom promote products. Being a good mini influencer earned her a shopping trip at Target, the mom revealed.
Pretty soon, Novah is seen totally rocking a curled orange wig. La’Shon praises her daughter for sitting while she hot combed her wig, which is a rite of passage for most little Black girls. The mom explained that her daughter will only wear the wig “for a couple days” because she was able to book her another hair appointment.
“Don’t act like y’all didn’t play dress-up as kids,” La’Shon says in the video. “Is y’all mad because your kindergarteners ain’t eating it up like this?”

Commenters were divided in their stances. Although many called her putting a wig on a kindergartner “insane,” others really appreciated how she showed up for her daughter.

The video went viral after being shared by TikTok “storyteller” Te-Erika. “Do you think that was cute, or too grown for a 5-year-old?” she asked.
“I don’t wear wigs nor do I know anything about wigs. But she will never forget the day her mom took the time for her to feel and look so beautiful the first day of school,” one person commented.
“She taken care of her daughter b4 school that’s a good mom in my book,” someone else wrote.
“It’s cute people would have talked if she didn’t do her hair and they gone talk the way she do her hair,” another commenter added.
