Anyone who wears dresses has probably received a compliment about them. That compliment typically follows with confirmation about whether or not that dress has pockets. If the garment in question does have the elusive pocket, it is met with glee. If it does not, it is met with, "Bummer."
Women like pockets but clothing for women rarely has pockets that are functional. As a woman, pockets are so foreign to me that even when my clothing has pockets, I don't use them. I am honestly scared of using my pockets because something might go wrong? What if everything falls out! Pockets are embarrassingly alien to me because they are so rare.
Enter: Poche Posh, a clothing line designed by two women and pocket enthusiasts.
Jessica and Visha are two dope women who started Poche Posh.
Poche Posh is a brand of women's clothing where every item is designed with pockets.
The line includes everything a woman needs. That means blazers and workwear.
Check out these cute trousers for example.
But are there dresses? Of course, there are many cute dresses.
And skirts...
And rompers...
Poche Posh is available in sizes S-3XL. They've even got an athletic line to boot.
So why pockets? Well, the history of why women's clothing nary have a pocket is pretty sexist.
Mic notes that pockets first began appearing in garments in the 1600s. However, this convenient feature was only available in men's clothing. Even way back in the 17th century, women wanted pockets. They would go as far as tying a sack under their petticoats because we've got ish to carry to!
In the 1800s, pockets were less popular and replaced with purses. Purses became increasingly ornate and decadent, but remained teeny tiny. The accessory was reserved for women of a certain class, and those women didn't leave the house with money. That's what men were for.
Thus, a lack of pockets and larger purses were indicative of women's prohibition from financial independence. Flash forward to World War I & II. With men abroad, women needed to meet the labor demands of the workplace. Thus, women's fashion began to include pants, pockets, and other utilitarian garments.
Then the 1960s arrived and basically since then the ethos of fashion has remained the same: women have to be skinny because "reasons." And pockets went away again. But with women reclaiming their independence in feminism's fourth wave, pockets are making a comeback. Pockets are making so much of a comeback that women are making their own damn pockets now!
