TRIGGER WARNING: This post contains information about stillbirth and infant loss, which may be triggering to some.
Just one day after the release of Prince Harry's highly anticipated memoir, Spare, the public is learning more about wife Meghan Markle's devastating 2020 pregnancy loss. Harry's new book details the moment when they found out she had lost the pregnancy and what they did with their unborn baby afterward.
Harry describes the traumatic moment in great detail.
According to his book, the miscarriage commenced when Meghan started feeling abdominal pains. Things quickly escalated, and the duchess began bleeding before she collapsed to the floor, prompting Harry to take her immediately to the nearest hospital for help.
The doctor informed them of their loss after they arrived.
"When the doctor walked into the room, I didn't hear one word she said. I just watched her face, her body language," Harry wrote, according to Express. "I already knew. We both did."
Harry recalled how they "both wept" after learning their baby's fate, and he admitted to feeling utterly "hopeless" in the aftermath.
Harry said he felt that way only four times in his life.
He shared that he'd only experienced that kind of overwhelming distress before while being "chased by paps" in a car with Princess Diana and Prince William, while flying in an Apache helicopter over Afghanistan, and when Meghan admitted to having thoughts of taking her own life.
We cannot imagine how painful this must have been for the two of them, who were so excited to give Archie a little brother or sister to grow up with.
The grieving parents then found a special place to lay their baby to rest.
Next, Harry described taking a "tiny package" to a "secret place" where they buried their little one. "Under a spreading banyan tree while Meg wept, I dug a hole with my hands and set the tiny package softly in the ground," he wrote in his book.
He also confided that the baby was left in a place that only they know about.
We can't imagine how difficult it was to relive those moments.
Both Harry and Meghan have been commended for sharing their story of pregnancy loss so candidly because the topic still remains somewhat taboo, even for those who endure the painful experience.
We hope that Harry's words help other grieving families feel less alone in their loss. Given just how popular his book has proven to be, we have a feeling he's going to reach a lot of parents with his openness and honesty.
